The Biggest Loser: Cara Castronuova And Brett Hoebel Interview

January 20, 2011 10:30 AM by Lisa Princ

This week we got to meet the new trainers of The Biggest Loser on NBC, Cara Castronuova and Brett Hoebel. In a recent press conference we were lucky enough to get to learn a little more about these two and what they are bringing to the show. Keep reading for all the details!

The Biggest Loser‘s newest trainers took some time to chat about the show, their motivation and even Bob and Jillian! Read on to hear what they wanted fans to know!

Question: Tell us how and why you made the decision to come to The Biggest Loser and compete against Bob and Jillian?

Brett Hoebel: Every year I had been going out the castings, I’ve been pursuing it for years. I was working with Jillian, showing and training her on martial arts and she kind of put in a good word and helped get me that final interview. I’ve put in 15 years of hard work. I don’t feel its a competition amongst trainers, I mean 4 trainers are better than 2, I don’t feel I am being pitted against my friend Jillian, and Bob is amazing. With me you’re gonna get the real deal, a little of the NYC.

Cara Castronuova: For me it was a no brainer, The Biggest Loser is a no brainer, never saw the show to be honest, but I went on line and was inspired by it so much. I feel like I have a lot in common with these contestants. For me as a fighter, I like to surround myself with the best, I consider Bob and Jillian, as well as Brett the best.

Question: Can you tell us how your training styles have lead the “unknowns” to lose so much weight?

Brett Hoebel: You either know it or you don’t know it, there is no guesswork. Even if you have a great technique, it really depends on the individual and we have a great group of hard working contestants.

Cara Castronuova: For me its mental too, we train hard from day one and make them feel they are strong, they all have heart and it was our job to bring that out. You have to make them mentally strong first.

Question: Can you tell us about your certifications and if you have experience with folks as morbidly obese as these contestants?

Brett Hoebel: Not morbidly obese, overweight but this is different. We also have the greatest doctor, Dr. H, we have an amazing support staff that makes sure everything is safe and perfect for the contestants. I’m also applying the science because it’s different if you’re 474 pounds, than 100 pounds.

Cara Castronuova: I have a license in NY state as boxing trainer, I’ve learned a lot from my certifications and what I’ve done from the past, but I’ve got to tell you that nothing could prepare me for what it takes to be a trainer on The Biggest Loser ranch.

Brett Hoebel: I second that, training is the easy part. The emotional breakthroughs are the hard part, getting them to open up. If you go to my website and look at my bio there is a list of my certifications, there is a lot and I won’t bore you with the details here.

Question: How difficult was it keep a secret about being the new trainers?

Brett Hoebel: I think it was very difficult, when I got the word it was surreal but a little anti climatic. When we got the news he said “number one, you got the gig and number two you can’t tell anyone.” It was a blessing in disguise though I think since we put our nose down and focused on getting to know the contestants and I think it worked since we have broken two of the records in The Biggest Loser history.

Cara Castronuova: For me too it was totally hard, I told only my close family but everyone else wanted to know why I was coming out here. A lot of my friends and family sent me texts asking me after the first episode if that we me. It’s amazing that they knew it was me from the back of my head.

Question: Did you feel any pressure coming into the show as the new trainers?

Brett Hoebel: There is a little pressure. Bob and Jillian are two of the greatest trainers ever. They have inspired America, they have inspired so many – I want to do that, I want to inspire America.

Cara Castronuova: Of course there was some pressure as Bob and Jillian have been doing this for many seasons now. They’re iconic and they are the best at this. It’s an honor to train alongside the best. That’s only going to make me better and make me want to fight harder. Yes, it has been intimidating but I’m grateful that they’re here.

Question: Describe your training style in one word for us.

Brett Hoebel: Transformational. I’ve got to transform these people mentally, emotionally and physically.

Cara Castronuova: Hard. I like to push the contestants as far as they can possibly go, and in the process they earn respect and work harder.

Question: What is your daily eating regime like? Do you ever splurge?

Brett Hoebel: For me, it’s all about balance. You have a high calorie day and then you train harder the next day. One thing I know for sure – if you think of exercise as a 60 minute commitment, 3 times a week at the gym, you’re missing the point completely. If you think that going on a diet has something to do with nutrition, you’re missing. You don’t see the forest through the trees. It’s a lifestyle. Having a nutrition regiment is something you have to integrate into your life.

Cara Castronuova: We’re human beings, I love to sit and eat a good meal, and I do reward myself once in a while. For the most part I keep up healthy eating, but I won’t lose sleep if I indulge once in a while.

Question: Have you ever considered doing a show with children?

Brett Hoebel: I don’t know about a show, but we’re hoping to do a segment where we can go in a school and help children. Obesity is an epidemic with kids is the saddest thing going on right now.

Cara Castronuova: I would love to work with kids but I am not sure they would do a show.
