On Friday’s season two premiere of Who Do You Think You Are?, Desperate Housewives star Vanessa Williams takes us along as she travels the country to unlock the secrets of her family’s past. But what inspired the former Miss America to do the show?
Williams says that it’s all about her father, Milton Williams, Jr., who passed away four years ago, and that she’s “searching for his roots on his behalf.”
Check out the video below to learn more about Vanessa Williams, her relationship with her father, and what she’s hoping to find out about her ancestors throughout this journey.
Then, watch as the cameras follow Vanessa as she starts her quest at a cemetery in Long Island, New York, where her father and several other family members are buried. There, Williams gets some information on her great great grandfather, David Carl, who she believes fought in the Civil War.
The actress soon discovers that David Carl not only fought in the Civil War, but that he enlisted in the military the very first week that blacks were permitted to serve, and just a week later, purchased land for his family.
