American Idol: Fantasia Barrino Lands Lead In Mahalia Jackson Biopic

February 09, 2011 03:00 PM by Christine McDow

Since winning American Idol, Fantasia Barrino has had many ups and downs in her life.  She has a beautiful daughter, a ton of money, but hit problems and had to file for bankruptsy.  Recently she admits to trying to commit suicide.  She has bounced back though and is proving it by landing the lead roll in an upcoming Mahalia Jackson movie.  Keep reading to learn more about it!

If you do not know who Mahalia Jackson was, she was a gospel singer who died back in 1982.  Not only was she a great artist but she was a civil rights activist and a huge supporter of Martin Luther King Jr.  Fantasia Barrino will be portraying Mahalia in a movie based on a book about her life, growing up in poverty in New Orleans.  Does this sound like a movie you will watch?

In regards to her suicide attempt Fantasia said in her Behind The Music episode that, “I didn’t have any fight in me.  I didn’t care about anything. I just wanted out.” We truly hope that Fantasia is feeling better and on her way to a full recovery and happy life.
