During a recent press conference, Simon Cowell confirmed that he would be a judge on his upcoming fall hit (yes we think it will be the next great thing), X Factor. He did not however reveal who will be sitting next to him on the judging panel. That announcement will be made in the next 3 or 4 weeks. Who do you think it should be?
One of the names in contention is his former cohort on American Idol, Paula Abdul, however Simon Cowell would not confirm it, but did talk about it.
“I’m a massive fan of Paula’s,” he said. “We were friends 80 percent of the time and interestingly, we’ve been in contact. I’m not going to say on this call who we are going to confirm or not confirm, but we’re talking to a number of people.”
So how is this new singing competition going to differ from American Idol? According to Simon Cowell there will be more mentoring of the talent than just critiquing the performers.
“I wanted to make a show where I, along with my fellow judges, help competitors on a regular basis,” said Cowell, whose music industry experience is mostly on the record label end. “It’s more interesting to me because I have a lot more to do with that. When you lose an artist, part of you has lost as well. You win when they win.”
Also, where American Idol has an age limit, anyone over the age of 12 can audition for the X Factor. Duo’s or even large groups can audition as well. After discovering Susan Boyle on Britains Got Talent, Simon realizes a star can be found at any age.
Also, during the interview it was revealed that the specific Sony label that will be producing the winners record has not been selected yet. It will be determined after the winner is announced and they can pick a label that best suits him, her or them.
