Who Do You Think You Are?: Rosie O’Donnell on “Teen Mom” and the Show Her Kids Definitely WON’T Be Watching

February 12, 2011 09:00 AM by Shayla Perry

Comedian Rosie O’Donnell, who will be featured on this season of NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? (and on her OWN talk show!), made headlines when she defended MTV’s controversial reality show, Teen Mom, and admitted that she watches the program with her 13-year-old daughter, Chelsea. But in a recent interview, O’Donnell, no stranger to controversy herself, let RTVM know her thoughts on what makes Teen Mom such a positive show for teens, and one show in particular that her kids will NOT be watching–EVER!

Rosie O’Donnell, who makes her return to TV this Fall on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, knows a thing or two about what constitutes quality family television.  Not making that list would be MTV’s newest show, Skins, which Rosie says “would never be appropriate for anybody in my household.”

And while we won’t catch the O’Donnell children watching Skins anytime soon, one show Rosie’s okay with her kids tuning in to is MTV’s Teen Mom.

Here’s why!

“We started watching 16 and Pregnant and I thought that was an amazing show because it really– they said every single episode how all the girls wish they had waited, how all the boys flaked out, what it did to their social life, to their educational life, to their…everything,” said O’Donnell. “And so I thought that was a wonderful show and then it sort of spun off into Teen Mom, right? And then you could see the actual reality not only of giving birth to the baby and the first few weeks, but what it was like a year and a half later with an 18-year-old or a 16-year-old girl trying to have a life.

“I do think it’s really horrible that the teen mothers are getting to be superstars, but that’s more a statement of our current media culture than it is about the show. The show itself I think is educational and informative. Some of the people that they profile obviously have harder lives and lower intellects and maybe some economic disadvantages, like Amber [Portwood]. It doesn’t seem as though she had, let’s say, the kind of opportunity that Farrah has had in her life.

“These are all fascinating subjects to bring up with your children and to have them understand there are many ways to be in the world, many choices that you make every day and these are the consequences of these kinds of choices.”

What do you think? Do you agree with Rosie O’Donnell’s thoughts on MTV’s Teen Mom, or disagree? Sound off in the comments below!

And for fans who can’t wait until the Fall premiere of The Rosie O’Donnell Show on OWN to see more of Rosie, you can catch her on her upcoming episode of NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?, which airs Friday, February 18th at 8|7c.
