American Idol: Katharine McPhee Cast In Musical Pilot “Smash”

American Idol on FOX season five runner up Katharine McPhee has sure been keeping busy since the show. Katharine, who has been starring in musical pilots as well has recently landed a role in the new musical pilot “Smash”. Keep reading for all the details!
American Idol alumni and season five runner up Katharine McPhee has landed a new role in Steven Spielberg’s musical pilot called “Smash”. The hour long pilot, which will air on NBC is from DreamWorks TV and UMS, is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg and follows characters who come together to put on a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway led by the musical’s composer and lyricist to be played by “Will and Grace” star Debra Messing.
Katharine McPhee, who will sing in the pilot will play a beautiful struggling actress who will do anything to land the role of Marilyn Monroe in the musical. This may sound a lot like “Glee” to some folks and while it may be similar this show will feature original songs penned by Tony Award-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, unlike “Glee” in which the cast sings popular chart topping songs.
