American Idol: Hollywood Week Final Round

February 17, 2011 07:36 PM by Lisa Princ

American Idol on FOX is back tonight for the final round of Hollywood week. After all the drama last night during the group round, how would the hopefuls hold up for the solo performances? Keep reading to find out if your favorite made it to the next round or not!

Last night we watched American Idol the contestants perform in groups and tonight for the final round of Hollywood week, they would be performing solo, using either the band and music or acapella but they were also allowed to use their instruments as well for the first time this season. Right off the bat, the ladies came out with strong performances as we watched Haley Reinhart perform with the band and Ashton Jones, who we just met last night from Nashville who was told that he “liked the way you attacked the song” by Steven Tyler. And 15 year old Thia Megia also came out and blew the judges away giving the women a good start.

But then mistakes started to happen as we watched Adrian Michael mess his lyrics and start over and over and over. But Adrian was not the only one who had lyric issues as Caleb Johnson struggled as did Frances Coontz, who we also just met last night. But up next was Clint June Gamboa aka Junebug who performed “Georgia on my mind” and once again Clint proved why he belonged there as his performance was perfect. Following in Clint’s footsteps was lesser known hopeful Kendra Chantelle, whose performance of the same song was excellent as well. Chris Medina was up next and thought he had found an original song in “My prerogative” which he performed acapella, but little did he know that his fellow group member, Carson Higgins chose the same song to sing with music instead. Both of these guys did an excellent job and impressed the judges.

We definitely saw our share of instrument users on American Idol’s final round of Hollywood week tonight. Included in there were Julie Zorrilla, Colton Dixon and Robbie Rosen who all performed while showing off their piano skills. And of course we had our share of guitars as well as we watched Brett Loewenstern and Caleb Hawley on guitar. Casey Abrams decided to be different though and showed up with a stand up bass for his performance of “Georgia on my mind”. Casey, who had the judges unsure when he walked in, ended up blowing them away as his bass was a huge hit. Then we watched Chelsea Oaks perform “because of you” which was not that good and we also learned that her group mate Jacqueline became ill and had to leave the competition for good.

A few of the standout performances of the night were Lauren Alaina, who sang Aerosmith’s “Don’t wanna miss a thing” and Jacob Lusk the newcomer we met last night whose performance of “God bless the child” earned a standing ovation from the judges and brought Jacob to tears. John Wayne Schultz was present tonight as well as showed off his guitar skills in his performance. Then we saw quick performances from Stefano Langone, Jovany Barreto, and 15 year old Jacee Badeaux, who choose “Time of my life” by David Cook. Ashley Sullivan was up next and could not get her song – “Everything” by Michael Buble correct as she claims her nerves were getting to her, but I think she is just a drama queen and needs to go home. Scotty McCreery and Tatynisa Wilson were the final two performances of the night and both messed up the lyrics of “I hope you dance”.

The came the toughest part for the judges on American Idol as the contestants were broken down into 4 groups and they had to break the news at to which groups would be staying and which groups would be heading home. Among those moving on are Brett Loewenstern, Jaycee Badeaux, Clint Jun Gamboa, Ashley Sullivan, Chris Medina, Robbie Rosen, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Casey Abrams, Carson Higgins, Julie Zorrilla and Scotty McCreery. Of the early favorites that would not be moving on we saw Corey Levoy, Brielle Von Hugel and Chelsea Oaks. Be sure to tune in next week to watch the remaining hopefuls take on The Beatles!
