American Idol on FOX wrapped up Hollywood week last week and tonight they’re headed to Las Vegas. But as the hopefuls inch closer to the final 24, who will crack under the pressure? Keep reading for all the details!
American Idol kicks off Las Vegas week with The Beatles songs at the Mirage hotel. The remaining contestants are narrowed down into groups of two or three to perform tonight. With the pressure at it’s highest, even the vocal coaches are starting to stress out and then we met the vocal coach from hell, who was cursing at the teenagers. But the pressure on the hopefuls does not end there as they then must practice in front a group of Beatles gurus and barely any of them are getting good critique from the experts.
But then it was time to perform for Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and up first were Stephano Lagone and James Durbin who came out rocking to “Get back” followed by Pia Toscano and Karen Rodriguez who gave a perfect performance of “Can’t buy me love” in which Jennifer told them she loved that they “got it” as in performing not just singing. Then we got to see new comer Jacob Lusk along with Haley Reinhart and Naima Adedapo who showed beautiful harmonies although Randy asked that Jacob please not hold back anything despite what the experts told him the day before. We then watched quite a few strong performances by Rachel Zevita, Lauren Turner and then Tim Halperin and Julie Zorrilla utilized the piano for their beautiful duet.
Next up on American Idol we watched a rocking yet soulful performance of “Saw her standing there” by Jerome Bell, and two lesser known female contestants – Lakeisha Lewis and Tatynisa Wilson in which Steven told were crazy and Randy loved it. With tough act to follow, next up we saw Kendra Chantelle and Paul Mcdonald put their spin on “Blackbird” and the judges loved it but I thought it was a bit boring honestly. And then things got strange as we watched Ashley Sullivan, the ever famous drama queen of season ten run off with her boyfriend to get married in Vegas…..at get this, the very same place her “idol” Brittney Spears was married – let’s see how long this marriage lasts.
Then our teens who were cursed out by the vocal coach from hell were up and Thia Megia and Melinda Ademi’s performance was not as good as they had hoped and were told they were “alright” but Melinda was way behind in her phrasing. Then we watched Ashley Sullivan and her partner Sophia Shorai perform “We can work it out” and it was definitely not a great performance. Another performance that was not very strong was “Hello Goodbye” by Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Denise Jackson – luckily the judges chalked it up to being the wrong song. More strange performances graced us by Carson Higgins, Casey Abrams and Chris Medina which did not showcase their talent at all.
Next it was the final performance of Beatles night on American Idol by Jordan Dorsey, Robbie Rosen and Aaron Sanders and it was ok, but again not the best performance by these contenders. Following their performance it was time to make some cuts and the judges called up Thia Megia, Scotty McCreery, Jordan Dorsey, Ashton Jones, Robbie Rosen and Lauren Alaina and then let them know they made it to the next round. Others were not so lucky though as Mollie, the White House intern, Carson Higgins, Denise Jackson, Melinda Ademi and Ashley Sullivan among others were let go and told they would not be moving on.
After the remaining contestants performed one final song for the judges, it was time to walk the “Green Mile” to listen to their fate and find out if they would be moving on to the top 24. Up first was Naima Adedapo who sang her heart out with “Put your records on” and it paid off as she was the first female to make it into the top 24. Then we watched as Holli Cavanaugh did not make it despite the fact that Jennifer said she was out voted. Along with Hollie, Lakeisha Lewis and Alex Ryan were told they would not be moving on either. Then it was Clint Jun Gamboa aka Junebug’s turn and for his final performance he choose “Hello” after nervously making it to the judges’ room, he was named the first male to make it into the top 24.
Haley Reinhart was next to the judges room and despite her inconsistencies in the past, she was also being put through to the top 24. Deandre Brackensick made it to the judges room next after performing for his life and he was given the bad news that he would not be moving on, but at 16 years old he has plenty left to learn and grow. Up next was Paul McDonald who impressed the judges throughout the competition thus far and they then gave him the good news that he would be moving on to the top 24. Ashton Jones made her way up the “Green mile” next and she did it in tears and after telling her that they feel they found “the whole package” in her, she gets the good news that she is moving on to the top 24.
The last walk down the “Green Mile” of the evening was early favorite, Chris Medina, who touched our hearts with the story of how he has cho sen to stand by his paralyzed fiancee and care for her with everything he can. After giving a heart warming performance, Chris sat down with the judges and told them how much his fiancee loved meeting them all and the judges gave it right back to him. Jennifer, fighting back tears gives Chris the news that he will not be moving on to the top 24 despite the fact that he was an early favorite, he just could not keep up as the competition went on. After Chris said his goodbyes and walked out, Jennifer had an emotional breakdown and questions herself about how she let him down, but Randy and Steven were right there to console her.
That wraps up tonight’s episode, be sure to tune in tomorrow at 8 pm EST as the remaining top 24 will be revealed on FOX!
