The Amazing Race premiered last week on CBS and sent the contestants down under to Australia. Reality TV Magazine recently revealed some of the countries you can expect to see the contestants visit this season. However, host Phil Keoghan has confirmed that there are some locations that viewers should not expect to see the racers travel through.
With all the recent civil unrest and governments collapsing in the Middle East, Egypt is definitely out of the question. Phil spoke with the NY Post and said, “Egypt is off the map for us right now. There are certain countries off-limits right now. We’re not going to go to Afghanistan right now.” Phil explained that the show has had security issues in the past. “We’d been to Argentina a number of times, but there was a time we were shooting and we heard there was some political unrest there. It ended up not amount to much, but rather than taking any risk at all, we decided: ‘Let’s just not go there.’”
The show manages to send racers through exotic locations and avoiding risk by using a network of security consultants. “We have consultants who work with the show. They’d be the same people working with the news departments-companies that are security-risk management consultants. We absolutely rely on them.”
Just last season, the racers traveled through the Middle Eastern country of Oman. The next season of The Amazing Race would begin filming in the summer, but there is no official word yet or not if the entire region will need to be avoided.
