Johannesburg police are investigating whether to file charges after the dead newborn baby was found on the grounds of Oprah Winfrey’s South African high school.
According to the Associated Press, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy announced in a statement on Monday that it was awaiting the outcome of the police investigation and providing counseling for students.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson told the media, Oprah preferred not to comment because the case involved a minor.
News 24 has also reported that, “according to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, the girl gave birth at the school and was taken to Midvaal Hospital in Meyerton after she was found bleeding excessively. The baby’s body was found in the girl’s plastic bag at the hospital.”
The cause of death is not known at this time.
The school has endured its share of controversy since opening in January 2007. Former school matron Tiny Virginia Makopo was accused of abusing teenagers at the school by trying to kiss and fondle the girls soon after it opened. This past October, Makopo was acquitted of the charges.
In March 2010, Oprah settled a defamation lawsuit filed by former headmistress Nomvuyo Mzamane who claimed Oprah defamed her in remarks made after the 2007 sex-abuse scandal at the school.
