American Idol’s top 12 girls hit the stage tonight and just as we saw with the guys, the ladies were able to choose their song of choice. The guys did really well last night and received a lot of praise from the judges, even reducing Steven Tyler to swearing again, but in my honest opinion, the girls failed in comparison. Here is how the ladies did tonight and what the judges thought.

Ta-Tynisa Wilson
Ta-Tynisa kicked off ladies night with her version of “Only Girl” by Rihanna and I personally thought she sounded very karaoke, but I am a huge fan of Rihanna so maybe that’s why. In any event, Ta-Tynisa had the crowd rocking and two of the three judges loved her. Steven told her she sang it beautifully and Jennifer commented that despite a shaky start, she brought it all the way home. Randy disagreed saying she did not bring anything special to the table which led to a debate between Randy and Jennifer – I have to agree with Randy.

Naima Adedapo
Naima was next up to take the stage for the ladies and her performance of “Summertime” by George Gershwin was definitely one of the better performances of the evening. Jennifer thought she nailed the notes at the end and was very good while Randy said she no comparison to Fantasia, but he did like that she made it “interesting” for herrself. Steven seemed pleased as he told her that she was “just what America needs right now” and called her a new old time-y thing that could be new – whatever that meant!

Kendra Chantelle
Kendra came out on the stage looking like a star with her version of “Impossible” by Christina Aguilera and she sang it well. Randy said despite a couple of sharp notes, he loved how it connected to her and he really liked it while Steven seemed to be more focused on her “hotness” telling her how hot her clothes and voice were. Jennifer loved that Kendra fought her way into the top 12 with her beautiful voice and thinks we have more of Kendra to see.

Rachel Zevita
Rachel’s performance of “Criminal” by Fiona Apple was probably the strangest performance of the night. It was very “Broadway” and more of a show performance than a song performance. Steven told her he loved her strut and swagger but her moves were too Broadway for him. Jennifer agreed asking her if that is how she wanted America to see her and she wished we saw more of her amazing range. Randy was brutally honest and told her it wasn’t good and it just didn’t work which made Rachel look as though she was about to cry.

Karen Rodriguez
Karen came out and sang her heart out to “Hero” by Mariah Carey and what was beautiful and different about her performance was that she put her own Spanish twist on it, singing it in both English and Spanish. The judges loved her and she left Jennifer with goosebumps and nothing but wows. Randy loved that she changed some of it to Spanish as that made it her own and Steven called her a “one of a kind” singer and challenged her to sing that song with Jacob Lusk, who coincidentally Karen said was her closest friend in the competition.

Lauren Turner
Lauren brought the blues on stage tonight on American Idol with her version of “Seven Day Fool” by Etta James. She sounded good, but nothing spectacular although she needs to show more personality especially when doing this type of song, which is more of a performance. Randy loved the blues and told her “that’s how you do it” while Steven thought she was spectacular – sorry Steven but I disagree. Jennifer said while her voice was undeniable, she needed more..for that type of song, Jennifer would have liked to see her in the camera’s face and that would have put her over the top.

Ashthon Jones
Ashton was up next for the ladies and chose to sing “Love Over Me” by Monica which did not do her justice at all and I like Ashton so I was very disappointed. Steven told her she had the confidence of a queen, and she sings so sweet while Jennifer decided to swap “diva” stories with her. Randy was also disappointed and did not love the performance, telling her she was “bigger than that”.

Julie Zorrilla
Poor Julie decided to attempt to pull off a Kelly Clarkson tune with “Breakaway” and it just did not work well in her favor at all. The judges were not fans either as Jennifer said it was not her best performance and that we need to “believe your performance” while Steven praised her great voice but thought it was not the right song for her. Randy proved to be the brutally honest one again by telling her that she did nothing different than Kelly and she did not sing it nearly as good as Kelly.

Haley Reinhart
Haley was also one of the better performances tonight as she sang “Fallin” by Alicia Keys and while I say better performances, I mean her voice, she did nothing unique in her version either which was another disappointment. Randy told her that as well and Steven quickly disagreed saying he didn’t hear that and telling her how great she was. Jennifer agreed with Steven and at this point I started to think that Randy is the only honest one on the panel – notice how nice and sweet Steven and Jennifer have been to everyone?

Thia Megia
Thia sure proved she can sing for a 15 year old when she came out and sang “Out Here on My Own” by Irene Cara and once again she showed off her beautiful voice. The judges all loved her with Steven praising her perfect pitch and how hard the decision for America was, but she made it easy for him. Jennifer called it beautiful and such a quiet moment with all of the big performances making this one really special. Randy commented that the mark of a great singer is the quality of tone of the voice, and went on to add that her tone reminded him of Michael Jackson and ended with “this is what hot singing is all about”.

Lauren Alaina
Lauren chose a country tune tonight which was not a surprise but I was a bit disappointed that her version of “Turn on the Radio” sounded identical to the original by Reba McIntyre – she did not add her own spin on it. The judges did not seem to notice that however as they praised her to the heavens. Jennifer told Lauren that she didn’t even have to try, she was effortless and it was amazing how much of a natural she is. Randy told her she has a natural gift and he feels like she is a mix of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood while Steven told her “You kill me”.

Pia Toscano
Pia was the final performance of the evening on American Idol for the ladies and she performed “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders and once again the judges praised her although she was not that great. She did sing it with a beautiful voice, but once again where is the originality? Steven told her she was unbelievable, and Jennifer said she knew she was saving that for when it counted as the three judges gave her a standing ovation and left us at home scratching our heads.

That wraps up the girls’ performances, be sure to tune in tomorrow at 8 pm EST to find out which of your favorites will make it through to the top 10!

I like watching Idol. I haven’t missed a season, but it seems like this year its more like a beuaty contest for the women instead of the best singer. I’m sick of hearing “Your the complete package”. Some of them can really sing, some that were not put thru could sing better. BUT apparently they weren’t the “COMPLETE PACKAGE”
What happened to who can sing the best?
