Although we’re still awaiting confirmation that Survivor has been renewed for more seasons, details are emerging regarding the possible location for season 23 — and it’s familiar territory. Fiji could once again host the hit reality show, which is where season 14 filmed a few years back.
The potential return to Fiji wasn’t an overnight event. Reports indicate CBS had its eyes set on Tonga, an island nation in the South Pacific. But last week, the Herald Sun in Melbourne, Australia reported Survivor had decided not to shoot the upcoming season there in Tonga citing troubles securing accommodations and other services. Tonga’s director of tourism expressed his disappointment with the decision as quoted in the story saying, “I am very, very sad.” He goes on to say this isn’t Survivor‘s fault, but Tonga’s troubles in realizing “the huge national benefit of making this happen.”
This is where Fiji comes into play. Tonga’s prime minister also said in the Herald Sun‘s story that he anticipates Survivor will return to Fiji’s nearby shores instead. His reasons for that prediction were not reported.
A few days later, The Fiji Times Online reported there was no confirmation that Survivor would be returning to film another season. But the report also said that Fiji’s Audio Visual Commission had maintained contact with the show’s producers since they hosted Survivor in 2007.
This would not be the first time Survivor returned to a location. Panama has been used three times (seasons seven, eight and 12) while Palau, Samoa and Nicaragua have each been used twice (seasons 10 and 16; seasons 19 and 20; seasons 21 and 22 respectively).
Survivor: Fiji, which many fans consider among the worst in the series, featured 19 contestants battling as Haves vs. Have-Nots. Earl Cole was ultimately the $1 million winner becoming the first player to receive every jury member’s vote.
