The Real Housewives of Miami: Alexia Echevarria is in Hot Water in Hialeah

March 13, 2011 03:00 PM by Shayla Perry

Uh oh! After already having to clear up some confusion about her thoughts on underage drinking, Alexia Echevarria of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Miami has once again found herself trying to pry her foot out of her mouth. Who did the “Cuban Barbie” offend this time? Keep reading for all the details!

In the second episode of Bravo’s newest installment of the Housewives franchise, The Real Housewives of Miami, when trying to describe the focus of her publication, Alexia Echevarria referred to the people of Hialeah, Florida as “lower,” stating that Venue Magazine gave them a taste of the upper-class Miami social scene (which incidentally consists of Alexia and her friends), allowing them to live vicariously through the magazine.

That comment caused quite the uproar within Hialeah; especially since Alexia’s husband, Herman Echevarria, is a former Hialeah City Council president, AND a former chairman of the Hialeah Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

Shortly after the episode aired, and the proverbial s- – t began to hit the fan, Alexia Echevarria released a statement apologizing for her gaffe, and of course, blaming editing.

“The question was if Venue Magazine was only for the upscale people of Miami,” says Echevarria. “I explained the fact that Venue Magazine caters to everyone regardless of who you are, where you are from and what your socio-economic level is.”

Alexia went on to add, “I admire and respect the people of Hialeah; in fact my husband is a product of Hialeah.”

Do you think Alexia’s Real Housewives cast mate and PR pro, Marysol Patton, had any words of advice for the “Cuban Barbie” as to how to get herself out of this mess?

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that the city of Hialeah, Florida was negatively portrayed in the national media.

Back in January, Newsweek added Hialeah to its list of “America’s Dying Cities” due to it’s high foreclosure rate, which is almost double that of the national average.
