Richard Hatch, the first winner of Survivor and current contestant on Celebrity Apprentice, reportedly surrendered to U.S. Marshals today in Rhode Island to serve another nine months in prison. According to the Associated Press, Hatch’s additional prison term was handed down on Friday connected to his tax troubles.
It’s reported the prosecutors had asked for a six-month sentence, but the judged increased that punishment by adding three months. The judge reportedly said Hatch needs a substantial sentence that would send a message. In addition to the prison term, the Associated Press reports that Hatch has been ordered to serve 26 months of supervised release with 25 percent of his income being garnished and given to the IRS.
Hatch has been accused of not being compliant with the rules of his supervised release despite Hatch claiming in court he was working to solve the taxes with an accountant. It’s alleged he has not refiled his taxes from 2000 and 2001.
Hatch has already served more than three years for his conviction on tax evasion connected to his $1 million winnings from the first season of Survivor. Prosecutors allege, according to the Associated Press, that Hatch now owes approximately $2 million for the prize money, other income and penalties.
After the court hearing on Friday, Hatch told reporters he plans to appeal. He requested a delay in the start of his new sentence earlier this morning, but that was denied. The Washington Post reports that Hatch surrendered shortly after noon dressed in a blue sweat suit.
If he serves all nine months, this puts Hatch’s release in December, which means he will miss the finale of Celebrity Apprentice. That arrives on May 22 live from New York City when Donald Trump declares the winner.
Hatch skyrocketed to fame after winning the first season of Survivor against runner-up Kelly Wigglesworth by a single vote in 2000. He was brought back to battle in the eighth season — Survivor: All-Stars — where he became the fourth person voted off (fifth eliminated if you count co-star Jenna Morasca’s choice to voluntarily leave the game).
Hatch is now battling on the current edition of Celebrity Apprentice, which is on NBC Sunday nights. During the premiere episode, Hatch was the first project manager for the men, who lost the challenge where they had to sell pizza in New York City. Many of his teammates blamed Hatch for the first loss, but in the end Trump decided to fire David Cassidy instead. Hatch is on Celebrity Apprentice working to raise money for Grassroots Soccer, which is the organization co-founded by Survivor: Africa winner Ethan Zohn.
