Secret Millionaire: on ABC takes America’s millionaires away from their lavish lifestyles and places them in poor areas to live and volunteer. This week, millionaire James Malinchak travels to Indiana.
Tonight’s secret millionaire, James Malinchak, traveled to Gary, Indiana, a city hit hard by the economic downturn. Malinchak runs a training, seminar, coaching and consulting business. He also travels the country as a requested business and motivational speaker.
Malinchak has also worked with numerous celebrities and professional athletes. But a big part of his life is dedicated to serving and helping others. Most notably, he helped raise over $350,000 for various organizations, in just eight months time and personally contributed $160,000 of his own money.
Malinchak is a self-improvement specialist and is one of the top-selling authors of 16 books/products, including co-author of Chicken Soup for the College Soul. He is from a small steel town in Pennsylvania. He was a basketball player in high school, taking his team to the 1988 state championships.
He is given just $44 for the entire week. Malinchak visits the Baylor Youth Basketball program, which takes local basketball talent to conferences so scouts can see them and hopefully they will have a shot at getting an athletic scholarship. Malinchak plays basketball with the young women, a sport that’s very near and dear to his heart.
Next, he goes to Urban FaithWorks, a mother-son run program. He goes out with the volunteers and young children to plant flowers in the community. The program doesn’t take city, state or federal funds; it only operates on donations and they are in desperate need of money.
The Add an Eye organization, removes trash from the community. Malinchak spends some time removing trash from the area with crew leader Eric. Later, Malinchak presents the organization with twenty thousand dollars. He also buys Eric and his crew leaf blowers and other essential equipment they need but have gone without.
Back at Urban FaithWorks, Malinchak gives them ten thousand dollars. Malinchak then returns to the Baylor Youth Basketball foundation, to present them with a very special gift. He says he is so excited to give them a donation. He presents Ms. Baylor with fifty thousand dollars, she is so happy and the young girls are overjoyed. Malinchak made a special connection with the girls’ basketball coach and has learned of his struggles, so Malinchak gives Coach Tony twenty-five thousand dollars for his family.
Malinchak said he was touched by his time in Indiana and hopes to remain in the lives of those he touched.
