On the season finale of Top Chef: All-Stars, Georgia’s Richard Blais took home the title that’s eluded him for so long — Top Chef. But despite his relentless quest for redemption on the Bravo reality competition, Blais was never exactly confident that he’d actually win, and admits that he’s still in a state of shock.
“I’m in disbelief. I mean, I’m very shocked that my name was called,” says Blais. “In my head, I said, ‘You’re just not a winner. You’re just not clutch. You just can’t do it in the end. You know, it’s just not you.’”
Not exactly the most positive self-talk, but it’s just what fans have come to expect from the notoriously neurotic chef.
“Up until the last second, I was standing there saying, ‘Just be gracious and strong and don’t cry. Don’t lose and cry.’ Mike [Isabella] just put out some amazing food, and I was just getting ready to shake his hand and say, ‘Congrats.’”
But when Padma Lakshmi called his name instead of Mike Isabella’s during the Top Chef season finale, it was Blais that was on the receiving end of the congratulatory hugs and handshakes.
“It was about redemption for me, you know. It was about coming back and winning something that I should have won the first time that I was on Top Chef,” said Richard. “I’ve doubted myself for the last two years, and now maybe I don’t have to doubt myself so much.”
