April 06, 2011 07:17 PM by Lisa Princ

Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest are back tonight as the top nine finalists took the stage on American Idol on FOX. This week the finalists performed songs straight from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. How did your favorite do? Keep reading to find out!

American Idol on FOX returned tonight for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances, but it kicked off with Steven Tyler giving us a short and comical rundown of some of the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame folks. The finalists got to train with not only Jimmy Iovine this week, but also Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas joined them to help coach. Then it was straight to the performances as it was dropped to 90 minutes this week from the normal 2 hours. I have to say as we inch closer and closer to the finale, the performances seem to get better and better. Here is a rundown of how and what the finalists did tonight.

Jacob Lusk
Jacob was up first tonight and he chose to sing “Man In The Mirror” by Michael Jackson. Jacob was nervous because according to him, Rock and Roll is not his thing but he proved himself wrong tonight. The rendition that Jacob sang was beautiful as always had that Jacob spin on it. The crowd loved him as well as they would not stop cheering and screaming at the end of his performance. It was very good and very entertaining. The judges loved him as Randy said he was so proud of Jacob and went on to say he found his Jacob moment. Steven said it was beautiful and Jennifer told Jacob that he proves if you believe in yourself that you can do anything.

Haley Reinhart
Listening to the judges recommendations from earlier this season, Haley took on Janis Joplin’s “Take Another Piece Of My Heart” and she blew it away. This was exactly what she needed after being shaky for a few weeks. She looked like she was completely in her comfort zone and she had fun with it, and she rocked the house with her vocals tonight. The judges loved her as Steven said she nailed it and he could not find anything wrong with it. Randy told her that was the Haley that he loved and Jennifer said she was showing everyone that she is a contender.

Casey Abrams
Casey took on CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” complete with his stand up bass once again. This song proved to be a perfect choice for Casey. Vocally it was great and his bass was perfect as well. The judges loved it as Steven told Casey he was a true musician, not just a singer and Randy commented that Casey was making the upright bass cool and he did CCR justice tonight. Jennifer said she would be paying top dollar to sit in the front row of his concert. Ryan asked Casey if he was putting extra pressure on himself since the save but Casey said he was just trying to make the judges proud.

Lauren Alaina
Our country gal was up next on American Idol with country mixed with soul version of “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin. It was definitely one of the more difficult song choices of the night, and it was not my favorite but Lauren did a great job with it. The judges had nothing but praise as Jennifer told her she was amazing and Steven said she was so grown up now as opposed to the less mature girl she was at auditions. Randy told her she did a good job on especially since it was such a difficult one.

James Durbin
Our resident rocker was up next with a different side of him as he chose to sing “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by George Harrison. James proved to us that he could show his softer, emotional side during this beautiful and tear filled performance, it was amazing as he normally is. The judges loved the other side of James as well as they Randy told him that you need to show different sides and he won. Steven told him it was a really proud moment for him while Jennifer also loved being able to see that side of James that we have never seen before.

Scotty McCreery
Our country boy was back with who else? Why Elvis of course! Scotty took on “That’s alright mama” by Elvis Presley and it was amazing how he could turn such an old song into something new and hip. His vocals were spot on, and the crowd loved him – so much so that girls were flocking the stage to hug him after the performance. Randy was amazed and said that Scotty proved he was not a one trick pony and he showed another side of Scotty before declaring that he was “in it to win it”. Steven told him he was all hat and no cattle tonight and then went on about how he would love that music to come back into play. Jennifer loved that Scotty was having fun with it but questioned whether or not Scotty watched any rap or hip hop as she felt he had some “flavor in it.”

Pia Toscano
Pia was also out to prove the judges, or judge Randy wrong tonight on American Idol as she decided to switch things up go up tempo instead of a ballad. Pia chose to perform “River Deep Mountain High” by Tina Turner and she definitely proved to us that she can sing more than ballads. It was perfectly sang, fun and she really worked the stage for a nice change. Randy told her that she showed him what he already knew that she could deliver on an up tempo before declaring that Pia was also “in it to win it”. Steven called her a murdered saying that she killed it while Jennifer said it was amazing but also said that she was going to keep pushing Pia to do more.

Stefano Langone
Stefano was next up on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame week with Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman”. It was definitely not the best performance of the evening and personally I thought it fell a little flat and was boring. The judges had mixed reviews as Jennifer immediately gushed that she knew Stefano had it in him and that it was beautiful with an added layer of emotion. Steven said he nailed it, but Randy was not so sure. Randy told Stefano that he liked it but he wasn’t jumping up and down over it as the first part felt jerky.

Paul McDonald
Last but not least was Paul who chose to perform “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash. This was definitely one of the more entertaining performances of the night – I mean you can’t help but love this guy….there is just something about him. Paul definitely had the crowd rocking and his voice was perfect and to be honest it will be shocking if he is in the bottom three again – he definitely does not deserve to be. The judges loved him as Randy told him that he loved it while Jennifer called it a perfect way to end the show and amazing. Steven told Paul he was a crazy character – comical coming from Steven, and he also said that Paul rocked the house tonight!

Now, don’t forget to vote, vote, vote and then be sure to tune in tomorrow at 8 pm EST to find out which two finalists will be eliminated!
