On this Friday’s episode of the NBC reality series Who Do You Think You Are?, audiences will get to watch as acclaimed actress Ashley Judd searches for answers about her ancestors. But in her new memoir, ‘All That Is Bitter & Sweet,’ Judd reveals a few insights into her family’s recent history; namely, the shocking sexual abuse that she suffered as a child, and her rocky relationship with her mother, country star Naomi Judd.
“My mother, while she was transforming herself into the country legend Naomi Judd, created an origin myth for the Judds that did not match my reality,” Ashley Judd writes in her memoir, ‘All That Is Bitter & Sweet.’
“She and my sister [Wynonna Judd] have been quoted as saying that our family put the ‘fun’ in dysfunction. I wondered: ‘Who, exactly, was having all the fun? What was I missing?”
In her book, Judd goes on to reveal everything from the many lies her mother told regarding the identity of her sister, Wynonna’s real father, to her alleged neglect, claiming that as a child she was “left alone for hours, sometimes days at a time.”
Ashley Judd also recalls being the victim of sexual abuse and incest at a young age, and tells how that abuse, paired with her difficult relationship with her mother, Naomi, led to a deep, dark, depression.
In 2006, the “Kiss the Girls” actress sought help to overcome her depression at the Shades of Hope recovery center in Texas. The time she spent in recovery inspired her to tell her story to others.
Though her mother isn’t exactly portrayed in the best light in her book, Ashley says that the whole family is doing well, and very supportive of her decision to pen the memoir. Naomi Judd also issued a statement to The Today Show, wishing her daughter and her book well.
Ashley Judd’s book, ‘All That Is Bitter & Sweet’ is in stores now.
And don’t forget to watch Ashley Judd as she learns more about her family tree on a new episode of Who Do You Think You Are? this Friday at 8|7c on NBC.
