American Idol: Nigel Lythgoe Says Pia Toscano Was Never A Front Runner

April 11, 2011 01:39 PM by Lisa Princ

This week on American Idol on FOX fans were outraged and the judges were shocked when Pia Toscano was eliminated after her awesome Rock And Roll performance, but executive producer Nigel Lythgoe says he was not surprised because Pia was never a front runner. What is he talking about? Keep reading for more details!

American Idol’s executive producer Nigel Lythgoe did an on camera interview with Yahoo! Music’s Reality Rocks at Friday’s Vegas callback auditions for So You Think You Can Dance in which he revealed that Pia Toscano was never a front runner, not in terms of her voice, but it terms of the votes. Nigel said “I know the voting results, so I know she was never a frontrunner. The fact of the matter is that it appears that Pia didn’t connect with the audience as much as we maybe think she did. And she wasn’t voted through.”

Nigel Lythgoe did admit that he was upset with the results, as we all were and he also revealed some other thoughts. He added that he could see American Idol possibly changing the voting format next season to something like they do on So You Think You Can Dance. For those who have never seen So You Think You Can Dance, they allow America to determine the bottom three but the judges would decide who leaves the show. Nigel also stated that would ultimately be a call for Simon Fuller. What do you think of the possibility of changing the voting system? Comment below and share your thoughts with us!

Lythgoe is a pompous ass to begin with. So glad this show is destined for the garbage heap.

I love “So you Think You Can Dance”!!! I think it would be much better to change the voting. It would make it less of a popularity contest and more of a talent contest.

It borders on the ludicrous that an excellent singer’s future is–to a significant degree–affected by the whims and frivolities of the voting “public”. That “public” is probably 80% comprised of gum-snapping, pubescent, vacuous very young girls who are, hormonally enough, going to vote for young boys that appeal to all the adjectives above. If my admittedly unresearched characterization of the voting bloc is correct, then MUSIC or actual TALENT has nothing whatever to do with voter direction. |By all means, give the youngsters a say, but who is actually kicked off the program should be left to the judges.

Nigel must think that everyone is stupid. He says the voting totals didn’t have Pia as a frontrunner.

The problem is that the votes on AI never reflect reality.

Nigel, YOU CAN NOT USE VOTING DATA TO ARGUE THAT THE VOTING SYSTEM IS NOT FLAWED.

Pia was in the top 3 on ever on-line poll that I read every single week. That’s reality.

Nigel, the voting system is flawed, the data from it is not relevent. It’s called logic!

Pia has an amazing voice and she will pull through in other ways now that she is off Idol. She just has to find her niche.
