Who Do You Think You Are?: Ashley Judd Vs. Hip Hop?

April 11, 2011 02:00 PM by Shayla Perry

In her new memoir, “All That Is Bitter & Sweet,” Ashley Judd, who was featured on the season finale of NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?, makes many shocking revelations about her childhood, including claims of sexual abuse and neglect. Now, it’s being reported that the actress and humanitarian also had some pretty harsh words for the hip-hop community in her book, calling the genre “rape music,” and singling out artists like Snoop Dogg and P. Diddy for their charity work, which she feels is hypocritical.

“YouthAIDS created hip, public service announcements for TV and radio using popular local and international celebrities and athletes and was participating in the MTV World AIDS Day ‘Staying Alive’ concerts,” Ashley Judd writes in her memoir, “All That Is Bitter & Sweet.”

“Along with other performers, YouthAIDS was supported by rap and hip-hop artists like Snoop Dogg and P. Diddy to spread the message … um, who? Those names were a red flag,” adds the actress, who was recently featured on NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? “As far as I’m concerned, most rap and hip-hop music – with its rape culture and insanely abusive lyrics and depictions of girls and women as ‘ho’s’ – is the contemporary soundtrack of misogyny.”

In response to Ashley Judd’s comments about hip-hop, Roots drummer Questlove took to his Twitter page to write about the actress and her recent appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

“hmmm. at least i got my answer as to why ash judd didn’t give us so much as a nod on her last visit. im a criminal [sic],” writes the drummer and hip-hop icon. “EVERY genre of music has elements of violence,” Questlove continued. “It speaks MORE volumes that in rap only a certain side gets promoted.”

We’re sure this hip-hop battle won’t be ending anytime soon!

Ashley Judd’s memoir, “All That Is Bitter & Sweet,” is in stores now.
