Extreme Makeover Home Edition: Hall Family

April 17, 2011 05:57 PM by Candace Young

Tonight on Extreme Makeover Home Edition the design team travels to Witchita, Kansas to do a rebuild for the Hall family, who had been forced to relocate when dad, Carl, was paralyzed in an accident and could no longer navigate their home safely or effectively. Keep reading for all the highlights, including appearances by baseball star Derek Jeter, and the Atlanta Braves

Ty Pennington and the design team take the Extreme Makeover Home Edition bus to Witchita, Kansas to meet the Hall family. On the way they learn that Stacy and Carl were high school sweethearts, and that Carl used to play baseball for Witchita State. The pair married and had four children, but Carl became paralyzed from the mid-shoulders down in an car accident, which changed their whole lives.  Carl continued to pursue his love of sports by coaching, and the family moved to a rented condo because Carl couldn’t navigate their bi-level home.

Ty and the team go to the indoor baseball facility at Witchita State University to surprise the family. Carl is there giving a talk to the ball team when Ty hollers into the megaphone, “Good morning Hall family!” Ty introduces Bob Cook from Bob Cook Homes, who will be in charge of the project.

The Halls and the design team go to their current home to learn about the challenges Carl faces each day. The younger son and daughter share a room and both love sports. The two older daughters share another room and love fashion. Carl shows Ty some newspaper clippings and talks about how much he admires Derek Jeter. Stacy tells Ty how their lives changed in an instant and she does the best she can to cope – failure is not an option.

The Halls are sent to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The project gets underway on a plot of donated land. Paul plans a sports-themed bedroom with lockers for son, Logan. Paige is planning a city/loft room for daughter, Megan. Her friends help out.

Ty calls the design team together and yells, “Guys, come on out!” A bunch of mascots emerge. Ty tells the team they must come up with a mascot for the Hall family. They decide on a lizard.

The family gets a call from Ty in Orlando and learn they will be going to Atlanta Braves spring training at the ESPN Spring Training Center. The kids bat some balls as Carl makes his way around the bases in his wheelchair. Paul comes to introduce them to Carl’s favorite player, Derek Jeter. Carl and Derek have a chat – it’s pretty special.

At the build, Ty plans a room for Stacy and Carl that will be a tribute to their love. The rest of the team work on their mascot. By day four, an accessible backyard with a batting cage is being put in.

Ty and Paige meet with an expert who is helping them design a pitching machine that Carl will be able to work by blowing or puffing in a pipe – it will give him back the ability to play ball with his children.  They then head to Nelson Field where Carl used to play as a kid – they contact Carl from there to tell him that the Sears Blue Tool Crew will donate $30,000 in his name to the field, which has been renamed The Hall Family Sports Field. Ty yells, “Play ball!”

While Ty oversees the finishing of the home, the Hall family is brought back and taken to Carl’s alma mater, Witchita State, by the rest of the design team. Paige announces that Carl is being inducted into their Hall of Fame.

Carl makes a speech and the crowd applauds. Jillian follows with another announcement – Witchita State is giving all four Hall children scholarships.

Finally it’s time for the Hall family to see their new home.  The crowd shouts for the driver to ‘move that bus’ and the Halls react emotionally to the sight of their accessible house. They thank Bob Cook and his crew and head inside.

The Halls are impressed with the beautiful decor and open spaces. Carl realizes he will be much more independent in the house. Paige tells them that CVS Pharmacy has equipped the house with high-tech voice-activation controls for Carl as well as an elevator.  The kids check out their rooms and love them.  Carl and Stacy view their master bedroom, which brings Stacy to tears.  Paul appears to show them the track which will take Paul from the bedroom to the washroom and shower.

Last, the Hall family get to see their new backyard complete with batting cage. They are stunned to see the pitching machine for Carl, and he wastes no time in trying it out.  They also have an indoor sports room which looks like a basketball court. ‘Hallzilla’, their family mascot appears much to their delight. Ty welcomes them home.
