American Idol: Executive Producers Say Voting May Change Next Season

April 21, 2011 10:00 AM by Lisa Princ

After the controversial elimination of Pia Toscano this season on American Idol on FOX fans were left in an uproar and the judges were left wishing they had more saves available to them. Now, the executive producers say that the voting system “may” change but not this season. Keep reading for all the details!

American Idol’s executive producers are now saying that they may be changing the voting system – next season anyway. We recently heard from Nigel Lythgoe that they may implement a system similar to the one on So You Think You Can Dance where America votes but the eliminated contestant is chosen from the bottom three by the judges. Now fellow executive producer, Ken Warwick speaks up about the voting system as well as he said “Maybe we’ll change the voting system slightly next year. Maybe we’ll limit the number of SMS votes or online votes, but it will remain the same this year.”

Ken Warwick went on to say that they will definitely be having discussions about the voting system but he reiterated that no changes will be taking place this year that he knows of as he responded to Nigel’s suggestion by saying “I wouldn’t put too much faith in anything. That’s just one of the solutions or ideas on the table. There are a number. We won’t be putting anything into practice…well, I’m pretty sure we won’t – until next year.” Ken also said that he realizes that the voting tends to lean in the guys’ favor because “predominantly young girls and moms are the driving force behind these kinds of shows, probably more prominently now – the vote is going to be slewed toward boys”, which is yet another reason they feel they need to talk about the flawed voting system.

What do you think of the voting system, should it be changed? Post below and share your thoughts with us, we’d love to hear from you!

if the judges have the final say on American Idol. I will no longer watch american Idol. I don’t think it would be fair since it seems like all the judges have the same comment about everyone. Leave it up to the public. I don’t care. Judges can still play favortism just like the public

It is every bit as much a personality contest as a singing one. The people that vote arent really judging the contestants by their talent or abilities.(thats what the judges are for)If voters like their personality, costumes, looks, song choices and lastly their voice, they vote. If they slide in any area, voters stop voting. They dont switch their to someone else if their favorite gets voted off.I think if you dont vote for someone when there are 10 contestants you shouldnt be allowed to come in at the end when there are 2 or 3 left.

Yes they should institute the same voting format as So you Think you can dance. Because last week Casey should have not been eliminated. The judges reactions showed it. They would have eliminated Jacob. The voting process is flawed and this option balances it out.
