It’s finally here — the season premiere of NBC’s singing competition, The Voice, hosted by Carson Daly. And with superstars like Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, and Christina Aguilera serving as mentors to the aspiring artists, the show promises to deliver powerful performances from the best voices in the country, week after week!
But before we get to the premiere episode, here’s a quick rundown of everything you need to know about the show’s format!
Now that that’s out of the way….
The show begins with coaches Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine performing Gnarls Barkley’s hit, “Crazy,” showing the contestants how it’s done!
After the superstars take their seats, the first contestant, 31-year-old Tarralyn Ramsey from Jacksonville, Florida, hits the stage to sing Faith Hill’s “Breathe.” With her mother cheering her on backstage with Carson Daly, at first, Tarralyn seems unphased by Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green turning their chairs around. After her performance, Adam Levine admits that he didn’t select her simply because he knew she sang far better than he does, with Blake Shelton telling her that he just didn’t have a chance against Cee Lo and Christina. With tears in her eyes, Tarralyn chooses Christina Aguilera to be her mentor throughout the competition.
Next up is Patrick Thomas, 20, from Nashville, TN performing “Live Like You Were Dying.” The three male coaches are all impressed by his vocals, with Christina Aguilera explaining that she just doesn’t feel comfortable working outside of her genre. Oddly, that’s the exact reason that Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green are interested in taking him on. Enticed by his Country music connections, Patrick chooses Blake Shelton as his coach.
The third contestant is father-of-six, Jared Blake, singing his rendition of “Good Girls Go Bad.” Blake Shelton comes close, but none of the judges select Jared to continue in the competition.
Twenty-five year old Vicci Martinez of Tacoma, Washington belts out a raspy “Rollin’ In The Deep,” which has both Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera turnin’ in their chairs. So who does she choose? With some prodding from Adam Levine and the audience members, Vicci bows down to Christina Aguilera and her undeniable talent before settling on Cee Lo.
Sonia Rao, 24, hails from New Jersey, but her parents, who are from India, are skeptical about her trying to pursue singing as a career, so she wants to prove to them that she has what it takes to make it. Sonia performs “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys, with Cee Lo Green coming so close to pushing his button to select her. When the coaches turn their chairs around after the song, Green is kicking himself for not picking her, but it’s too late, and unfortunately for Sonia, looks are not a factor at all in the competition.
Next to the stage is the competition’s first duo – Elenowen – a married couple from Nashville, eager to break into the industry and out of Nicole’s mother’s basement. The coaches are surprised to hear not one, but two voices singing, “Falling Slowly,” and Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton both want them on their teams. Nicole asks each of them why they feel they’re a good fit. Cee Lo says that although Blake may suit them better, since they’re more folksy, he has the ability to make them more of a “Sonny and Cher” type duo that’s able to appeal to a broader audience. Shelton, however, tugs at the heartstrings, telling the young couple that he knows what it’s like to be with someone in the business, and he will not only help them launch their careers, but he’ll also teach them how to protect their relationship. Nicole passes the decision along to her husband, and he chooses Blake Shelton.
The next voice is a familiar one — Frenchie Davis, a former front runner on American Idol, until her past caught up with her. Not giving up on her dream, Frenchie performs Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl,” and Christina Aguilera likes it! She’s happy to be working with Christina on her team, but Frenchie is THRILLED when Cee Lo Green recognizes her from her performance in “Rent” on Broadway.
20-year-old Kelsey Rey is performing “American Boy,” and excited to be judged on her talent and not her looks for once. Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green are quick to turn around, with Christina Aguilera waiting until the last minute. But it’s Cee Lo that wins her over.
Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, and Cee Lo Green all have 2 team members, but Adam Levine has yet to select anyone.
Will 22-year-old Jeff Jenkins from Texas be his first? As he sings “God Bless the Broken Road” in memory of his mother, all four of the coaches turn their chairs around one by one. It seems that he may pick Blake Shelton, but as Blake points out, Jeff could do well in whatever genre he chooses. And who could turn down Adam Levine’s pleading? Not Jeff apparently!
California girl, Rebecca Loebe, hits the stage with a haunting rendition of “Come As You Are,” that has Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine battling for the chance to work with her. Almost left speechless by their praise, Rebecca decides to work with Adam.
Joann Rizzo, a 56-year-old New Jersey mom, auditions next. Christina Aguilera comes close to choosing Rizzo during her performance of “I Say A Little Prayer,” but her vocals, though interesting, aren’t as unique as the coaches would like them to be.
A shy, 16-year-old Xenia from California wows with “Break Even,” getting the attention of Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton. Blake tries to woo Xenia by telling her that Cee Lo may be a bit too strange for her, with all of his costumes. Cee Lo can’t guarantee that he won’t be showing up in costume, and the quiet girl with the hypnotic voice picks Blake.
Tje Austin, from Austin sings “The Way You Are,” with Cee Lo and Adam racing to turn around first. When the song is over, Christina is upset that she didn’t push her button, noting that Tje sounds a lot like Cee Lo, and Cee Lo agrees. Adam is sincere in his desire to work with the 27-year-old, but it’s Cee Lo Green that wins him over in the end.
Father-of-two, Javier Colon, 27, is up next. After a stirring rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” again Adam and Cee Lo are first to turn around, with Christina and Blake shortly following suit. Javier asks Aguilera and Shelton what took them so long to buzz in, and after Christina tells him that she was waiting to “get lost” in him, Colon surprisingly chooses Adam Levine.
The last singer for the evening is 41-year-old Beverly McClellen from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. But don’t let the age fool you! As Beverly says, she’s 41, but she’s rockin’ a 27-year-old mentality and ready to shock the judges with “Piece of My Heart.” Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine are in love with her voice, but Adam’s even more impressed with her passion and enthusiasm. In a surprise move, Beverly joins Christina’s team, giving each coach a total of three singers so far.
Next week, the competition heats up as the Blind Auditions continue!
