It looks like American Idol finally has a worthy opponent! After months of anticipation, the season premiere of NBC‘s newest reality competition, The Voice, aired on Tuesday, April 26th, and according to the ratings and reviews, the show is already a hit.
The season premiere of The Voice proved to be ratings gold for NBC; bringing in a total of 11.8 million viewers, despite being up against powerhouses like Dancing with the Stars and an extended episode of Glee, making it the highest rated premiere of a new series since Undercover Boss‘ season premiere following the 2010 Super Bowl.
The show’s format — choosing singers based on talent alone — was a large draw for viewers, who also enjoyed mentors, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Christina Aguilera.
And here’s what some of the critics had to say:
Zap2It: “We’re a bit spooked not only because we liked NBC’s new reality singing competition, The Voice, but because so many people we know also did.”
People Magazine: “It’s hard to say what was more entertaining on the premiere of NBC’s new singing competition, The Voice — the antics deployed by celebrity coaches Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton, or the singers with the dramatic back stories.”
TVLine: “The Voice’s central conceit — that its judges must turn their backs to auditioners, and decide based on singing ability alone whether to press a button and throw their hat in the ring as a potential mentor to said singer — may be the truest way to find the next great radio sensation.”
Of course, there were also some negative reviews, particularly one from Entertainment Weekly‘s KenTucker, who called the show a “garish bore.” But for the most part, the show has been well received. And the current fan favorite? Javier Colon.
The question is — will the show be able to hold on to these ratings as the season continues?
Now it’s your turn!
After watching the season premiere of NBC’s The Voice, what’s your opinion of the show and mentors Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and Cee Lo Green?
