This week on FOX‘s American Idol, the top five took the stage with songs from “now and then” in effort to make it into the finale four. Keep reading for all the details on some of the best musical performances of the season!
American Idol kicks off tonight with “now and then” songs, mentored by not only Jimmy Iovine, but Sheryl Crow as well. This week we saw two performances by each contestant and up first were the “now” performances and this is how it went down:
Our resident rocker was first up tonight and for his “now” song he chose “Closer To The Edge” by 30 Seconds To Mars. As usual James came out rocking and gave one his best performances ever. He had the crowd and the judges moving right along with him. Steven told him that he “kicked that songs’ ass” while Jennifer thought he proved that he wanted to win it all. Randy chimed in last saying James was “in it to win it”.
Jacob was up next and he chose a much more complicated tune for his “now” song in “No Air” by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown. Before his performance Jacob told Ryan Seacrest that he wanted to make it to the top and that he did feel like he was the underdog, but this was the type of music he would put out. His performance was okay, but it was not very strong which is really what they all need at this point in the game. The judges had mixed reviews as Steven told Jacob he loves his voice, but Jacob needs to find his niche. Jennifer thought it was good that Jacob decided what type of music he wanted to sing. Randy disagreed and thought this was not the right type of music for Jacob to be performing.
Lauren chose to take on Carrie Underwood this week with “Flat On The Floor” in which Jimmy thought was a good choice and would show that Lauren was coming to fight. The performance was powerful and definitely one of Lauren’s best to date as she had the house rocking along with her and her confidence level was very high tonight. Randy loved it and thought she was moving in the right direction while Jennifer said Lauren ate it up. Steven told Lauren she is as good as it gets.
Country crooner Scotty was up next and he chose “Gone” by Montgomery Gentry for his “now” tune. Jimmy loved the idea that it had a more rock sound to it, and it rocked the house alright! Scotty was absolutely amazing and it looked good to see him so confident. To me, this song was almost better than original and the crowd loved him. Steven told him that saw Scotty dance with the devil tonight, while Jennifer said he owned the stage. Randy once again told Scotty he felt like he was at a concert and that Scotty was “in it to win it”.
Haley was up next and in a strange choice of songs she chose to take on an unreleased song by Lady Gaga. Haley hit the stage with a tune called “You and I” and while her vocals were okay, the song was really not her nor did it go over well with the judges. Jennifer thought that it was a cool idea but not Jimmy’s best advice while Steven had nothing but praise saying she put her spin on it. Randy told her it was risky to come out and do something that no one knows and he added that he didn’t think that song was going to do her any favors.
Next up on American Idol it was time for the “then” songs and this is how the final five did:
For his “then” song James decided to tackle something softer in “Without You” by Harry Nilsson. James actually broke down in tears during the rehearsals as he thought of his family and Jimmy was worried that he would break down on stage. James did a good job with the song and we got to see the tender, emotional side of him. The crowd loved him as they always do and the judges thought it was good as Steven said that was as beautiful as it gets. Randy told James it was emotionally perfect and that the competition was no James’ to lose. Jennifer insisted that James was definitely serious about winning the whole show now.
Jacob was back again and hoping to redeem himself for his “then” tune. Jacob chose to go in a completely different direction and Genre this time with “Love Hurts” by Nazareth and this performance was 100 times better than his last performance. This song really showed off Jacob’s talent and vocals. The judges were much happier with Jacob this time around and Jennifer told him that he brought the tricks at the end, while Steven said he felt the passion and everyone got lost in him. Randy thought Jacob redeemed himself and that we have possibly heard the highest note ever sung on Idol.
For her second performance and “then” song Lauren chose “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers in honor of her parents. Jimmy thought it was a good choice as it is a big song that everyone knows. Lauren looked so beautiful donning a white and blue gown, hands down best dressed for the evening and she sang the song beautifully – finally Lauren seemed like she wanted to win it. The judges all agreed that she sang beautifully and they loved it.
Scotty decided for his “then” song that he was going to take on “Always On My Mind” by Elvis Presley or Willie Nelson as some of you know it. During his rehearsals, Jimmy told him not to try and compete with the other contestants, but to stay true to himself and Scotty did just that. This was another stellar performance by Scotty McCreery and he definitely left us wanting more. Jennifer told him what a well rounded artist he proved to be while Steven said it was perfect and he could not pick it apart. Randy said that in this case the simplest things get the biggest reactions and he loved it.
Haley was up next and hoping to redeem herself with “The House Of The Rising Sun” by The Animals and it definitely proved to be a much better choice for Haley than her last. It started off with just pure Haley and no music, but the music came later and so did the high notes. Haley blew this one out of the water and definitely proved she was out to win as well. The judges loved her as Steven told us she sold everyone tonight on this one and Jennifer said that song had never been sung like that before. Randy called it the best performance of the night!
