The Voice: Let the Battles Begin!

May 10, 2011 08:11 PM by Shayla Perry

The teams are set, and now, it’s time for Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee lo Green, and Adam Levine to make some cuts! With the help of some of their friends, like country icon Reba McEntire and R&B singer Monica, the coaches of NBC‘s reality hit, The Voice will prepare their team members to compete against one another in The Battle Round, and fight for a spot in the next phase of the competition– the Live shows. Which of the 32 singers will go on? Keep reading for everything you missed in tonight’s episode!

This week on The Voice, now that each of the coaches have selected their 8 team members, it’s time to narrow the field from 32 to 16. And what better way to determine which contestants will continue on than to have them compete against one another head-to-head?

But first, they’ll get some help from their coaches and other mentors to prepare them for The Battles!

Christina Aguilera meets with her team to give them the rundown as to what’s happening next in the competition. She’s also breaking them into pairs for The Battles.

First, it’s Tarralyn Ramsey and Frenchie Davis, who will both be singing Beyonce’s “Single Ladies/Put A Ring On It.” To get them ready, she’s asked Australian pop singer, Sia to give the ladies some pointers as well.

There’s obvious tension between Tarralyn and Frenchie, since one of them will be leaving the competition, but it’s just business, and Christina reminds the two artists to remember to enjoy the experience.

After host Carson Daly introduces both singers, the Battle begins, and the ladies perform an amazing duet. All of the coaches agree that it was phenomenal, and that Christina has a tough decision ahead of her. So who will go on to represent Ms. Aguilera in the Live shows? Frenchie Davis!

Now it’s time for Blake Shelton’s team: Patrick Thomas vs. Tyler Robinson, singing Elvis Presley’s  “Burnin’ Love.” And their other mentor to prep them for the Battles? Reba McEntire.

With their families backstage cheering them on, the men take to the stage and battle it out. Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine both think it’s Tyler Robinson that should take the win, but it’s Blake’s decision to make. It’s a tough choice, but Blake Shelton ultimately chooses Patrick Thomas.

Next up, Adam Levine is having Casey Weston and Tim Mahoney battle against one another, singing “Leather & Lace.” Adam’s brought Maroon 5 Music Director, Adam Blackstone, for some assistance. Levine has both artists practice their performance on the stage, where Mahoney will likely be more comfortable, but will his years of experience be able to beat Casey’s raw talent?

Adam and Adam watch as the two sing their hearts out, hoping to impress their coach. Blake Shelton’s choice is Casey, but Cee Lo says that he’s attracted to Tim’s unique voice. Adam Levine, however, selects [enter annoying commercial break] Casey Weston!

Cee Lo Green has chosen Vicci Martinez and Niki Dawson to sing Pink’s “Perfect,” with Grammy winning R&B singer, Monica, offering her assistance. During rehearsals, Cee Lo lets the ladies know that this decision will be difficult for him to make, since both of their voices are so powerful and unique. Which one will he choose?

Niki and Vicci enter the ring and deliver an awesome performance, which gets a standing ovation from all of the coaches and Adam Levine dubs the best duet of the night. It’s probably the hardest decision of the night, too, but Cee Lo Green selects Vicci Martinez, promising a tearful Niki Dawson that he won’t forget about “his sister.”

Next week…8 more contestants will battle it out for the chance to compete for YOUR votes in the Live shows. Who will make it?
