This week on FOX‘s American Idol, the top four took the stage with songs that inspire them as well as songs of Leiber and Stoller. Keep reading for all the details on some of the best musical performances of the season!
American Idol kicks off tonight with the top four trying to make it into the top three. This week the finalists would be singing two songs – the first would be a song that inspires them while the second would be a song of Leiber and Stoller. Up first were the inspirational tunes, and after Ryan Seacrest announced that Steven Tyler’s book is a best-seller, the performances started. Here is a glimpse of how they did during the inspirational performances.
For his inspirational song choice, James chose “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey as he felt it represented his journey on the show. James came out complete in attire that looked like something Steve Perry had worn and he slayed the song to perfection. The judges loved him as Steven asked if that was an indication of what’s to come and said he “did it right” while Jennifer said it was an amazing, really great job. Randy gushed about James’ tribute to Journey and Steve Perry and went on to tell James that was the highest degree of difficulty and he pulled it off.
Haley was up next and chose Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” as she loves the message this song relays. Haley looked gorgeous and we could feel her emotions but the performance was not good in my opinion. While we did see Casey Abrams cheering her on, the judges were not cheeringas Jennifer said she felt that song did inspire her, but she needs to choose her songs better especially since James chose such a great song. Randy agreed with Jennifer and said that song did not fit her and she sounded like she was screaming as well as saying it was a bad song choice. Steven disagreed and said they were both wrong and she nailed it.
Country crooner Scotty was up and for his inspirational song he chose “Where Were You When The World Stop Turning” by Alan Jackson. Scotty nailed the song as usual, I will shocked if he does not make it into the top three or the finale for that matter. Everyone loved him as Randy said it was a great amazing song, and a perfect choice as well that he was set for super stardom. Steven said it was beautiful and he can see Scotty’s passion while Jennifer said she was in love with Scotty and what he stands for.
Lauren’s inspirational song choice was “Anyway” by Martina McBride in light of the recent storms that wreaked havoc on her hometown. It was a beautiful performance of a beautiful song and Lauren looked stunning – it is so hard to believe she is only 16. The judges loved her as Steven said she did it again, she broke his heart and delivered the song like a blue plate special. Jennifer said she felt like Lauren was listening to their advice and that her performance was great. Randy told Lauren that last week he was worried, but this week Lauren was back “in it to win it”.
Round two of the performances would be songs of Leiber and Stoller as the contestants got mentored by Lady Gaga this week. Here is what they chose for their second set of performances and how it all went down.
For her second performance, Haley chose “I, who have nothing” and Lady Gaga tried to teach Haley how to be a little dramatic and for this performance Haley needed to comeback after the last one. It was definitely a dramatic performance and better than her last, but would it be enough to save her from elimination? The judges gave her a standing ovation this time around and Jennifer kicked off telling Haley that this is why they couldn’t take it easy on her. Randy said that everyone needs a moment tonight and she came back and went on to say she was “in it to win it”. Steven said he always knew it, it was classic Haley.
Scotty chose “Young Blood” by The Coasters and it looked like he and Lady Gaga had a bit of fun during the rehearsals as she told him he needed to think of his microphone as his girlfriend and he needed to “stick his tongue down her throat” – in other words she wanted him to keep close to the microphone. Scotty definitely added a little humor to this tune and he was very good once again. The judges loved him and Randy kicked off saying that he loved that he did a fun song and then said that we just saw both sides of a Scotty concert. Steven said Scotty made Gaga’s yaya go lala – typical Steven humor, but he did say that he loved it. Jennifer said it was really great and Scotty hit his stride.
Lauren had chose to sing “Trouble” by Elvis Presley, and Lady Gaga gave her some lessons on getting into character. It was another stellar performance by Lauren as she was really able to get into character and make the song her own for the evening. Steven started by saying that it was well done and Jennifer said she saw a performance quality in her that she hadn’t seen before and called it vocally great. Randy then said we saw a fun side of Lauren this time and he really enjoyed it.
James Durbin closed the show tonight with “Love Potion Number Nine” and Lady Gaga showed James how to move his hips and get “sexy”. James came out fully swinging those hips and rocked the house, so much so that the crowd would not stop cheering – he really took the song and made it his own, what a showstopper for the end of the night. The judges loved him as Jennifer said that showed her that he can sing anything while Randy said James is having a moment every single week and he loved it. Steven closed saying James showed there is nothing he cannot do with his voice.
