American Idol: “James Durbin Day” Will Carry On Despite His Elimination

May 14, 2011 09:00 AM by Lisa Princ

It was recently reported that Santa Cruz had plans on holding James Durbin Day if the rocker made it into the top three of FOX‘s American Idol. Despite his elimination, Santa Cruz is still planning on holding the event this afternoon, complete with James Durbin courtesy of Idol’s approval! Keep reading for all the details!

American Idol’s James Durbin was a shoe in for the finale, or at least we thought so and so did his hometown of Santa Cruz, Ca when they planned “James Durbin Day” for the rocker’s homecoming, which only the top three get on Idol. After James was eliminated on Thursday evening, the event was quickly called off, but according to a local news source, the event is back on with American Idol’s approval.

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel the festivities are still on for today as they said “On Friday, ‘Idol’ agreed, for the first time in its history, to allow an exception and to sponsor an eliminated competitor for a homecoming concert. Traditionally, the show only sponsors hometown trips for the top three. James Durbin finished fourth in the competition.” They added that “American Idol has confirmed that it will allow James Durbin to come to Santa Cruz. The homecoming event will not, however, be broadcast on Idol.”

If you are in the area and plan on attending the event, there will be a press event with James Durbin at the Louden Nelson Center from 2:30-3:15 pm, and James will also take the stage for some performances around 5 pm. Santa Cruz Mayor told the paper “Our community is extremely proud of James. And we’re excited that American Idol made this exception to allow him to return home to a big Santa Cruz welcome.”

Good for James Durbin that Idol has decided to allow him to go home, maybe that will ease some of the pain and anger his fans are feeling right now.

Remember that the two day finale will actually take place on Tuesday, May 24th and Wednesday, May 25th – so be sure to set your DVR’s accordingly. Be sure to tune in next week to see the top three take the stage to battle it out for a shot at the finale on American Idol on FOX!

I wonder if Randy and the others were right in making use of their one call going against the voters with the Casey or whatever is name was . Seems like the judges wound up with egg on their faces .

It was obvious from the beginning that James had star quality. However, what angers me is something went wrong with the voting that night. I’ve heard too many people say they couldn’t get through to vote. Also the judges always acted like he was sure to be in the finals. Come on, at least Ryan knew if James scores were weak the week before, and they put Scotty up, but said he wasn’t necesarily the low person. I think that was a manipulation of the vote. If James’ fans had known he was low, but we weren’t warned. Perhaps AI didn’t think his music has as much potential to sell as Country.

I’m disappointed because I’ve watched all season and I was looking forward to a great finale, and frankly now, ah, so and so, And this is coming from a huge Country fan.
