Extreme Makeover Home Edition Family Under Investigation

May 19, 2011 10:30 AM by Candace Young

Extreme Makeover Home Edition has been improving the lives of deserving families and real-life heroes for over six years. It’s hard to imagine that anyone would take advantage of Ty Pennington and those at ABC who make the home makeovers happen, but the Cerda family may have done just that if the allegations against them are true.  Read on to find out why they were under investigation and how it relates to the show…

According to Cutline, during a recent trial in Oregon it was alleged that a woman whose family received an Extreme Makeover Home Edition two years ago may have been committing medical child abuse.  Terri Cerda told the show’s producers that she and her daughters suffered from an immune disorder called combined immunodeficiency disease. The girls were depicted as having to wear masks to guard against the toxins and germs in their former home.

Extreme Makeover Home Edition built Chuck and Terri Cerda a new home which featured an air filtration system, a swimming pool, and many other amenities. Before the end of 2009, the family had to sell the home because they couldn’t afford the upkeep.

The family moved to Oregon and began looking for doctors to treat the girls. During this time, Terri Cerda had a disagreement with a pediatrician who didn’t believe her daughter to be as ill as she claimed. Other doctors and a hospital social worker also questioned Terri’s claims and in the end she was reported to Oregon’s child welfare agency.

The girls’ maternal grandfather took them in when they were taken away from Chuck and Terri.  Six doctors testified against Terri, and none testified on her behalf, however, her husband Chuck was found to be capable and the girls were returned to their parents.

Terri Cerda and her daughters immediately returned to Las Vegas and resumed medical treatments there.  Oregon officials made two attempts to take the children back but were denied by a judge both times. They were allowed to send medical records to the family’s doctors in Las Vegas and to notify Nevada’s child welfare authorities about the case.
