America’s Next Top Model winner Brittani was always a front-runner, but still had a roller coaster season. After a massive meltdown, Tyra Banks wanted to eliminate her from the show. She discusses how it feels to win, how things are between her and Alexandria now, and being Molly’s new roommate.
Question: How did your mom react to the news?
Brittani: She was just so excited and really proud for me. She found out watching the show like everybody else while I was in New York. I’m not sure what her real reaction was but she called me and was so happy and everything. My whole family went out in my small town afterwards and celebrated.
Question: How early on did you think or know that you might actually win?
Brittani: Episode one, as soon as I walked in that bubble and I blew everyone away, and I did well with Russell James. Like, he was giving me amazing compliments, and I just kind of thought, “Wow, maybe I have a leg up on some of these girls,” because I was doing so well in the beginning. But then kind of towards the middle, as soon as I had my little breakdown moment with Alexandria, I kind of thought that my chances were shot. My confidence slowly started building itself back up when we were in Morocco, and I’m glad I was able to come back from that moment.
Question: We saw as Tyra basically said she wanted to eliminate you after that moment. Did you two ever talk about that?
Brittani: No, we never talked about it. I think we both wanted to pretend it didn’t happen. I don’t think anyone has ever said anything that offensive to me before. Like, it just shocked me, some of the stuff she said when she handed me my photo. Like, can’t you just say, “Congratulations, don’t do this again,” instead of, “You don’t deserve to be here, and if it weren’t for everyone else, you wouldn’t be”?
Question: Where did you leave things with Alexandria?
Brittani: When she left, I actually cried a little bit, because we were getting along at that point in time. I was sad to see her go because I was used to having her around, and she’s fun when she’s not being crazy. I called her after that episode aired and we talked. We’re cool. If she’s ever in New York and I’m in New York we’re going to get lunch. We’re civil. I’m not going to say we’re best friends, but we’re fine with each other.
Question: How do you think she’ll do on the all-star season?
Brittani: If she’s really participating in the all-star season as predicted and rumored, I’m happy for her that she gets to go and do that. I think she’ll do really well because she did well in our cycle, but I don’t know what the rest of the cast looks like, so I can’t judge who I think is going to win or has the most potential. But she’s definitely a strong competitor and she’s made for reality television, so I’m not surprised they asked her back, if that’s the case.
Question: What were you feeling going into that final panel with Molly? You were both such strong competitors…
Brittani: We were so neck-and-neck. I definitely felt like it could have gone either way. We got to the final panel and of course we were both nervous, and I thought Molly could have had a leg up on me because of the first photos. My overall call-out average was higher than hers and I’m better at runway, but she is just so good at taking pictures and I definitely felt like IMG loved her look. It was just so close that neither of us had any idea.
Question: You took a tumble on the runway. Did you worry that could affect your chances of winning?
Brittani: As soon as that happened I was like, ‘Well, I guess Molly just won. I can’t win if I fell during the runway show’. I was so happy that they looked at it as, ‘Hey, it happened but it happens to a lot of models and you came back with a smile on your face’. I was really relieved that they didn’t make it a big deal.
Question: It looked really painful.
Brittani: I have a scar that will be there for the rest of my life on my wrist. If I hadn’t used my hand and arm to catch myself I probably would have had a concussion and probably wouldn’t be able to model because my face would have been destroyed. I twisted my ankle a little bit but that wasn’t very serious, it was just sore and a little bit swollen so they wrapped it up for me so I could go on.
Question: What is the immediate next step for you as America’s next top model?
Brittani: My first job that I’m very excited about is the Italian Vogue shoot coming up. I’m excited because I get to travel to Paris! My first time leaving the country was with the show to go to Morocco, so many firsts. I’m so excited to see the world and rock the fashion industry, I hope. I’m so pumped to get started!
Question: You are moving in with Molly?
Brittani: We are. We’re going to have so much fun! I don’t really know how it came about. We automatically bonded throughout the whole show and to go through the competition together, it was almost like we had each other’s support, especially during the final few days when we were cranky and miserable. If one of us was down, we’d try to help the other one, not really that we were supposed to be doing that. We were competitors but friends at the same time. We’re going to have a great time in New York… I think it mainly came about after the show because we texted each other and said, ‘We’re both moving and will do awesome things so let’s move in together’. We took a weekend trip to find our area and in a couple of weeks we’ll be going up to find our apartment and moving in in July.
