Heading into the finals on Dancing with the Stars, the professional dancers feel the pressure of creating the perfect freestyle dance. Mark Ballas is known for his edgy freestyles. However, while practicing with partner Chelsea Kane this week, he caught a bad virus and has been sick at the most important stage in the competition. Will he be able to compete in the finals? Did his illness take away from rehearsals?
Mark revealed that he fell ill the morning after the results show in his blog for USA Today. “I woke up Wednesday morning really sick. I’d felt it coming on earlier in the week, but there was nothing I could do. Headache, sore throat, fever, runny nose, stuffed sinuses — you name it, I was afflicted by it. The pressure that we feel during the season to prepare for performing on Monday reaches stratospheric levels for Finals week. And unfortunately I had to attack our most important week with a pretty aggressive viral infection attacking me. As we all know, the show must go on, so I loaded up on antibiotics and went to work.”
The one saving grace for Mark and Chelsea is that they had one less dance to learn. “While this week was not as hectic as last week since we have one less dance to learn, it’s still been a long week. We’ll be on stage in less than a day, but every second counts. We have three dances to nail down and make performance-ready. Of course, the scrutiny of both the judges and the fans will be at its highest of the season, so we need to have our best dances of the season.”
So what does Mark have up his sleeve for the finals? “A lot of people have been asking me what’s in store for our Freestyle Dance. I’m known for my creative and off-the-wall choreography, and I think my partners and I have done some pretty fun freestyles in the past. You want some inside info on our freestyle? Too bad! A magician never reveals his tricks! You’ll have to tune in on Monday with 25 million of your closest friends.”
To see Mark’s latest dance creation, tune into the finals tonight on Dancing with the Stars beginning at 8 pm on ABC.
