Before season 10 of American Idol even premiered, Kid Rock bashed fellow rocker Steven Tyler‘s decision to join the Fox reality show. After initially defending the career move (which, by the way, has proved to be quite a smart one), Tyler now admits that he never really wanted to do Idol, telling reporters that he thought the show sucked. Of course, the Aerosmith front man’s opinion has obviously changed. What made him see the light – other than the fat paycheck – and who does he think will win tonight’s season finale? More after the jump!
“I never wanted to do American Idol,” Tyler confesses to the press. “I turned around and said, ‘This show sucks. How can kids be [an] American Idol? they haven’t played clubs, they haven’t paid their dues, they haven’t done what we did,’” the legendary rocker goes on to explain, adding, “I was wrong. They are out there, we just have to wade through a bunch of them.”
Now that he’s a fan — and a welcome addition to the show, Steven Tyler has formed some opinions on this year’s talent; specifically, finalists Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery. From the beginning, Tyler has made no secret of the fact that he thinks Lauren is American Idol material.
“When I first heard Lauren [Alaina], seven months ago, it was the second city,” the judge recalls. “You have to go through so many kids and she sang. She doesn’t try to hit the notes, the words just go to that place. Everybody else is trying to hit the notes, and she’s never had that problem with pitch. Maybe bad songs, but she’s been perfect and right and great,” explains Tyler. “I circled her months ago and said, ‘American idol.’ Her and about six or seven others, but I heard her first. I mean how does a 15-year-old sing like that? How does that happen? That’s magic, that’s the gift, and that’s what we’re looking for.”
So, with the season finale just hours away, do you think Steven Tyler is right? Is Lauren Alaina the one that will ultimately win American Idol, or will it be Scotty McCreery? Do you feel that Steven favored Lauren throughout the competition, and if so, do you think it’ll have an impact – either positive or negative – on Scotty McCreery’s votes? Tell us about it….
The season finale of American Idol airs tonight on Fox at 8|7c.
