For our first RTVM Battle, it’s Vicci Martinez of NBC‘s The Voice against American Idol’s Haley Reinhart, both singing “Rollin’ In the Deep” by Adele.

As much as I disliked her this season of American Idol (not her singing but her attitude) and after listening to them both in my opinion Haley blows Vicci out of the water for this one and wins hands down
Hopefully Vicci is less of a snob though.. Would love to see what everyone else thinks!

Haley’s version is better for me, I like the edginess and feel of it, along with the little vocally additions she adds they make you have to listen to many times to fully pickup.
Vicci uses vocal power that makes you take notice but is little different than most other girl power singers out there today and quickly becomes old after hearing it a few times.

This shows that Rolling in the Deep is an impressive song no matter who sings it, but the difference between Vicci Martinez and Haley Reinhart is like night and day, with Vicci shouting and Haley singing.

Haley Reinhart is the best by a long way, there’s truly no comparison – her vocal range and versatility are exceptional switching from sultry blues to jazz to classic rock and even country (she sang ‘blue’ perfectly, she can sing anything) and her raspy tone is very emotive and unique.
p.s: Rollin’ is not haley’s best vocal demonstration (the song was a bit too easy for her) watch ‘house of the rising sun’ or ‘I who have nothing’ on AI, amazing.

Without question Haley hands down. She put so much flavor and vocal color in to it. Vicci sang well but can’t touch haley’s version. That being said I do think Vicci has a chance at winning the Voice. This really isn’t fair since Haley got to sing the whole song, with better orchestration, and even back-up singers. She was more accomplished technically, but she was just singing a song. Vicci was ripping out a piece of her heart and soul and offering it to you. I’ll listen to anything Vicci sings any day of the week over Haley. She reaches out and touches her audience. She’s the real deal.

Did you listen to Jennifer Lopez’s comment to Haley after she sang Rolling? “There were moments when we forgot about Adel…”. I think a more fare comparison would be to compare Haley’s performance to Adel herself. I vote for Haley over Adel.

Not much of a fight, really.
Vicci Martinez has a unique voice, but one that lacks the kind of vocal power that is necessary to carry this song. She sounded stretched to her capacity as opposed to Haley Reinhart carrying the song like an effortless flute.
Plus, Haley’s artistry is what makes her stand out in this fight.
Changing up the whole bridge before the second chorus? And that whistle note she threw at the end? Absolutely compelling. That’s the distinction she needed to make the song her own, because Adele’s such a great singer that any cover of Adele’s songs would be vulnerable to being called as “karaoke”.
Vicci who sang Adele’s version note for note, fails to reach to Adele’s standards and instead fell into the trap of making herself sound like a bad karaoke version of the original.
I like Vicci the best on The Voice, but Haley’s just out of this world.

The only person who voted for Vicci Martinez in this battle at comment 78 clearly has some hearing troubles. (Btw, there isn’t any actual voting going on, right? XD)
Vicci Martinez is my favourite to win The Voice and I do think she has an amazingly unique voice. But this was a bad song choice for her. This song needed strong vocal power to carry the verses, and sadly Vicci sounded stretched to her limits during the chorus.
Other than Haley Reinhart obviously winning the battle-of-vocal-prowess, I think it’s Haley’s artistry that makes her stand out the most in this battle.
Changing the whole bridge before the second chorus? That whistle note she added at the end of that? Changing up the ending of the song to showcase her vocal range instead? Absolutely compelling.
If you’re going to cover the great Adele, you have to either sing better or at least on the same par; or you have to make the song your own. Otherwise, you’re risked being called a pale imitation of the original or just bad karaoke.
And that’s the distinction between the two. Haley Reinhart made the song her own AND sang on par with Adele, if not better. And Vicci’s was a pale imitation of the original.
THAT’S what you call giving it hands down. I do support comment 78 in that light, it really was a no contest.

I think the only clout that Vicci Martinez’s fans can hold on to in this battle is her “passion” in belting out the verses.
One, the subtlety in Haley’s phrasing brings out the emotion of the song much more compellingly. The sadness of the tone wrapped around “we could’ve had it all” that wasn’t found in Adele’s version was absolutely brilliant.
And the anger in the bridge that she completely changed up before the second chorus was much more emotional that Vicci stomping her foot and “giving a piece of her heart” for the entire song. No, I didn’t feel your pain, Vicci, I just saw someone stomping her foot because she looked into the song. But I felt the emotions behind Haley’s words. That’s the difference.
Two, restraint in that so-called “passion” is also a learned skill, and that might’ve done Vicci good. People like Jacob Lusk who was often taught on Idol the gravity of restraining your emotions often performed much better when they did. James Durbin could’ve taken a leaf out of that book too.
But bottom line, “passion” is not a free pass for lesser singing in a singing battle. Especially when the other singer outshone you on range, artistry and easily brought the same level of “passion” into it as well.

Vicci did sing the song with a lot of emotion. However, the question to ask yourself is– which version could you imagine hearing being played on the radio. In that respect, Haley wins easily. Obviously, Adelle sings with a lot of power– but for me, and I lot of people, I think, Haley’s version is more interesting vocally than Adelle’s.

Haley improved Adele’s version bigtime! The runs, the soul, the range, the emotion was spectacular! Youtube has 2M hits on her version, nearly the same at Itunes.. and Haley is not even being promoted these days.
Vicci is in desperate jeopardy of not even surviving The Voice’s quarter finals, primarily because she’s just average, has no range and everything she’s performed thus far, is “same ol stuff”!… Tell me you’d actually pay hard earned cash for a Vicci concert? just to be looking for the exit before the break out of boredom!
HALEY is so far beyond whatever Vicci will ever accomplish, especially with her lack of diversity both vocally and genre!

Vicci may have a unique voice, but on both counts of uniqueness and soul, Haley wins without a fight.
Haley’s unique not in just the tone of her voice, it’s her choice of notes, runs and intensity. Whereas Vicci’s just relying on her huskiness. With Haley, it’s her unique huskiness and much, much more. (Plus, if t’s just down to their God-given voices, Haley still wins hands sown. Did you not hear her borderline yodeling of the verses? She switches from her falsetto to her main register like craaazyyy!)
This is not even Haley’s best performance, I YouTube-ed her and dammmmmn, this girl can SING. Check out ‘House of the Rising Sun’ & ‘Moanin”.
And if there’s one recurring theme in the songs she does, it’s soul. This girl has a lot of soul in her song.
Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy Vicci and she is one of my favourites to win The Voice; but Haley’s a little too strong for any competitor.

Either the author severely underestimated Haley Reinhart or he/she was just banking in her popularity to increase the traffic to this site.
C’mon, you must’ve seen the Haley Reinhart landslide win from a mile away. Even casual viewers, not just Idol fans, and maybe even Vicci Martinez’s fans would’ve thrown their vote for Haley here.
It’s just not much of a fight, she was so obviously winning every aspect there is to be won in this battle. They’re so far away from each other, it’s not even funny.

Vicci simply does not have the range or the genre diversity that Haley excells at! Haley comes off like a seasoned and experienced pro, which is so very unique for a 20 year old young woman!

Haley is technically a better singer but she lacks emotional connection. The only emotion she exhibits is anger or “fun”. There is a complete lack of vulnerability… a wall between the artist and the listener.
Therefore, Vicci’s version is far superior, to me. She has a great deal of raw emotion. Technical ability is not enough. It’s all about making people feel.

You simply have no ears obviously! Vicci is one dimensional, couldn’t hit the next octave if she were goosed on stage, and has only a fraction of the soul that Reinhart possesses! The only reason that Vicci may even possibly survive this elimination round will be because those two barbi-twins and the cowboy on CeeLo’s team should have never made it as far as they did! @GoVicci – I just heard the Tim Halperin’s version now….its actually pretty good but mainly for the arrangement. His voice is still meh other than the falsetto. Put Haley’s voice on that arrangement and she’d hit it out of the park. She controls her voice a lot better and sings it with more passion

Hahaha, yup, not fishy at all that amidst an almost unanimous vote for Haley Reinhart as the winner of this battle, that three sureptitious comments in a row at #231, #232 and #233 voted for Vicci, all citing the only catch-all response that Vicci fans could hold onto: “emotions”.
Riiiiight, of course you’re not all the same person. Be more obvious, guys.
You probably didn’t even click the video. Because you have to have the emotional comprehension of a loaf of bread to have seen that and say “Haley Reinhart can’t sing with emotion” with a straight face.
The emotions that she injected into the tone of her voice, the phrasing of the words and the expression of her face are all there to prove you wrong. With that delivery, she could’ve made you cry during her solemn “we could’ve had it all” before she hit the last chorus. And made you feel as angry as she was when she changed up the entire phrasing of the bridge before the second chorus.
With Vicci……meh. All I see is a girl stomping her foot because she was into the song. Not because she felt sad or angry or frustrated. Just a girl who wanted to perform well at her audition. In the end thwarting the emotions behind the lyrics when she ran out of breath and had to sing outside her range. Pity.

As an accomplished pro musician, I have the ability to objectively listen to a singer and make my evaluation based on a number of parameters that characterizes a “good” singer. I listened to Vicki first and then to Haley.
While Vicki obviously had an intensity and passion in her performance, technically she was no where close to matching Haley’s performance. Haley had the intensity and passion but also had the refined vocal and emotional nuances with technical ability to move me emotionally, as well. She is, in fact, just a more developed artist. I don’t dislike Vicki but she obviously has a way to go to perform at the level that Haley is at. Good fortune to both of them!

Haley wins Hands down!!! Haley uses less power but more technical variation/range in her singing. Vicci sings with more force but I never liked excessive power in singing. It gets old and annoying. There are tons of singers out there that can power their way through a song. But only a few good ones can weave their way vocally and subtly in a sultry, blusy way that is very unique and endearing.

Haley knocked the ball right out of the park. Vicci is good but she is more raw and powers her way through the song. I found Vicci rendition too much in the face. Haley has more subtlety and her technical nuances she added into the song made it much more interesting. I actually prefer Haley interpretation over Adele herself. HALEY is a songbird of the first order.

After listening to the Voice singers like Vicci or Beverley, it is amazing when you compare them to Haley. Like Vicci does here and in her other songs,there is nothing remarkable about her voice at all. Basically a karaoke version and not really that great a one as well. Haley, like in every song she sings , brings something so unique that it becomes almost magical. Haley is a true artist and the others like Vicci, merely singers. There isn’t one song Vicci sings that I would ever listen to again after hearing it, while with Haley, I can’t stop re-playing them . I am amazed at how ordinary all the Voice singers sound after listening to Haley’s songs

You gotta be kidding! I have checked almost every cover of RITD (including Alvin and The Chipmunks and Vicci)and they ALL try to sound like Adele. It’s obvious to everyone that Haley is the ONLY one to do it differently from Adele. In what way has Vicci made it her own? The only person saying that Vicci has a recording deal is vicci Martinez. No one at Universal is saying that there is a deal or future contract for her. Is this question still lingering. I felt Haley was something special when I first saw her do ‘House of The Rising Sun’ on idol (I am not a fan of the show but, I happen to be surfing at the time), and then Led Zeppelin members called her (by way of idol execs) and gave her permission to do any song of theirs. They never give permission to a dud. Haley has no competitors to grades her skills by. This contest is over, isn’t it?
