Just as we head into more auditions tonight on America’s Got Talent on NBC, we had a chance to chat with the show’s host, and new dad, Nick Cannon. This sweet and funny guy dished on everything from being a new father to all the drama on the panel. Keep reading to find out what Nick wanted to share with us!
America’s Got Talent fans seem love the show’s comedic host, Nick Cannon – and for good reason as he always keeps us laughing. Nick took some time out his busy schedule to chat with us and he talked about his new role as a father as well as the show. Here is what Nick wanted to share with fans and viewers:
Question: Can you tell us about the drama between Howie Mandel and Piers Morgan – is it intentional for the show, or is it real?
Nick Cannon: I think it’s heightened reality. There is definitely tension between Piers and Howie, but in a way where they remain professionalism. I think Howie was offended in his first season that Piers would call him annoying and he vowed to be annoying to Piers this season.
Question: How do you feel about being in the middle of it?
Nick Cannon: Piers and I have always had our own little beef, so I actually enjoy it, it’s fun.
Question: With the new babies, how do you stay awake to do your job?
Nick Cannon: The beauty of it all is that I never slept before, so now it’s all about time management. I sleep more on airplanes and backs of cars and stuff than actually in the house. When I am home it is all about family time and spending time with the kids.
Question: Since you do stand up, do you feel a connection to the acts on the show?
Nick Cannon: As a fellow performer I know the intensity….especially when this is their shot at stardom. The level of intensity and stakes are so high, I empathize with them. When you’ve got all the chips on the table, you wanna go out there and give your best performance. I try to let them know it’s not the end of the world if it does not go as planned.
Question: With two brand new babies, are you going to slow down a bit now?
Nick Cannon: Nah….if anything I am going to have to speed up, I have mouths to feed…kids to put through college. If anything that just fuels my drive to want to be the best provider and father as possible.
Question: How would you feel about your children entering the industry later on in life?
Nick Cannon: I am not really a fan of encouraging my kids to be entertainers…not that there is anything wrong with it. If they do choose to I will be supportive, but I just think there are so many other things in the world to become and strive for. I think sometimes we value the entertainment world too much – I want them to be heart surgeons, or something [chuckles].
Question: Have the babies reached any milestones yet?
Nick Cannon: They are 6 weeks old now and I think they recognize me. I get excited when I see that in their eyes.
Question: How hard is it for you to leave your family? I mean, you haven’t even done the live shows yet.
Nick Cannon: Yeah we haven’t done the live shows yet, but it’s quite difficult. It’s one of the hardest things I have had to do. I am always on the road and my wife is extremely understanding, but I didn’t realize how hard it would be – all I wanna do is be home with my kids and I can’t.
Question: Do you have any favorite acts this season thus far?
Nick Cannon: There’s quite a few, the SH’boss boys are definitely adorable. Right now it’s so hard to say, there are some that will be on tonight and tomorrow that I am looking forward to….so I will just hold that until we see those.
Question: What do you think of the talent this season?
Nick Cannon: Ever year the show gets better and better, but I really think this is the best season ever. Just taking these different approaches and ideas, the talent is tremendous this year. Everything from the ratings to the chatter about the show, proves it.
Question: As a child performer once, do you have any advice for the child performers who come to the show?
Nick Cannon: Have a good time, enjoy yourself and don’t think of it as anything else but a fun performance. I ask them ‘are you ready to have a good time?’ If you can remind young people about that because they have so many outside pressures already. I try to remind them to do it because they love it, not because they could win a million dollars.
Question: With your busy schedule, what is so special about America’s Got Talent that keeps you there?
Nick Cannon: America’s Got Talent is the best summer job anyone could ask for. I have so much fun on this show watching people strive for their dreams and have fun. So many reality shows take things so seriously, but this show is more about having fun. Yes there is a million dollars, but we take the family fun into it where you can just sit down and forget the worries of the world and watch the fun.
Question: What kind of interaction do you get with the contestants?
Nick Cannon: It’s pretty true to real life as I meet a lot of the contestants in the line. I meet every single contestant on the side of the stage and I usually have about 5 minutes to interview them before they go out there. Through the competition I get to know them better of course.
Question: Has Mariah come to watch you on the show yet?
Nick Cannon: This season she hasn’t got a chance to because she is at home taking care of the kids….she has in the past and hopefully she will in the future.
Question: Do you ever get a chance to watch television at home, and if so, what do you watch?
Nick Cannon: My wife controls most of the dvr, so I end watching a lot of Nurse Jackie. Actually we both like real time shows, shows of that nature. We watch a lot of discovery channel and of course America’s Got Talent – I make my wife watch that over and over.
Question: Do you have any guilty pleasures that you watch?
Nick Cannon: [giggling] Yes, Spongebob Squarepants!
