For the first time in its 27 years, the Television Critics Association Awards have included a category honoring the best in reality programming. Five reality shows have been nominated for the new award, leaving several heavy hitters out of the running. Which reality shows have been placed in the spotlight with a shot to win the award? We’ve got a peek inside the upcoming ceremony along with our pick of the most-likely winner.
The nominees for the 2011 TCA Awards are…
- Amazing Race (CBS)
- Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (Travel Channel)
- Survivor (CBS)
- The Voice (NBC)
- Top Chef: All Stars (Bravo)
If past award shows are any indication of which program will win, the Amazing Race will likely rush past the competition to snatch this trophy. After all, it’s the king of the reality Emmy category. My personal choice would be for Survivor. I think it’s still the best reality show ever produced.
The biggest surprise here is the newbie of the group — NBC’s The Voice. There are numerous other shows that could better fit this slot than the newly created singing competition. This category is clearly missing some solid contenders like Deadliest Catch, Dancing With The Stars, Celebrity Apprentice and yes, Extreme Couponing.
Who do you think deserves to win?
The awards will be presented in a non-televised event on Saturday, August 6 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Nick Offerman will host.
TCA represents more than 220 journalists writing about television for print and online outlets in the United States and Canada. For 27 years the TCA has honored outstanding achievement in television and enduring contributions to the medium’s heritage through the TCA Awards.
