Last night on Fox‘s Masterchef we watched the top eighteen fail in their attempts to use cooking shortcuts as Joe Bastianich was not having it. Tonight things heat up once again as the remaining contestants are put into teams and two strong personalities collide! Keep reading for more!
Masterchef returned tonight with the remaining 16 chefs heading to the LA Times cafeteria for their very first team challenge. The winners from last night, Max and Derrick had to choose their teams. Max’s team consisted of Cristian, Alejandra, Giuseppe, Tony, Tracy Ester and Jennifer while Derrick chose Suzy, Adrien, Albert, Ben, Erryn, Jennie, and Christine. Right from the start, Tony was out to get Max because Max commented about Tony’s abilities and needing him to be the “prep” person on his team – and this episode was a battle of their personalities all night.
The teams would have 2 hours to prep a lunch rush meal for 350 people. Derrick seemed a bit more relaxed while Max reigned in his team and started dishing out orders. Each team had to choose one “special” menu item and Max’s team did slider burgers, while Derrick’s team did lasagna. Both teams were asked to cook pizza as well, along with some side items and dessert.
Right off the bat the drama started on Max’s team when they realized no one checked the size of the buns! Tony thought they should do regular burgers while Max thought they should just cut the buns…but it didn’t end there as Max questioned Tony’s ability to season and cook the burgers while Tony groaned that he had been cooking burgers for twice the time Max has been alive. I have a feeling these two are going to be at each other all season!
Suzy’s lasagna did not seem to be cooking properly and Gordon questioned the amount of cheese on the top, calling it a “heart attack”. Each item would go head to head and each diner would get a card to cast a vote for which dish they liked best and the team with the most dish wins would win the challenge. Max’s team was having trouble getting the pizza out, which caused Joe to send them away which would end in a loss for that dish.
The drama continued as Tony’s burgers were contaminated by being put on a dirty cookie sheet, which meant customers were being turned away and Tony blamed Max for poor leadership. In a last ditch effort, Tony took over and started grilling chicken to make sure they didn’t lose any more customers. After a tally of the votes, Derrick’s team ended up winning, leaving Max’s team facing a pressure test and elimination.
For their pressure test tonight, the members of Max’s team would have to create the perfect ravioli…you would think Giuseppe would be excited, but he informed us that he can’t stand ravioli and doesn’t cook them! As Giuseppe told Gordon he could be going home, Graham informed Tony that the other contestants were all blabbing that he would go home after this challenge, leaving Tony pissed. Jennifer made a big mistake by putting nutmeg in her pasta which the judges thought was a critical mistake – but how would they taste?
Giuseppe was up first and Gordon and the gang were completely disappointed in the Italian man’s pasta, and Tony’s did not fare much better. Cocky Max was up next but he proved that he does know something about cooking as he was one of the few who stopped to taste his pasta and start over when it tasted incorrect.
Alejandra and Cristian both made great ravioli for the judges, while they struggled to find out what was in Esther’s filling because it tasted funny. When asked if she used eggs in the filling, she couldn’t remember, but would that hurt her? Jennifer’s mistake came back to bite her as Gordon loved her filling but said it was destroyed by her nutmeg pasta.
The judges deemed Tony, Jennifer and Esther as the worst dishes and up for elimination, but Esther was the first one sent back to safety as her pasta was spot on. So with Jennifer and Tony left standing, Gordon revealed that Tony would be leaving the competition, but he advised Tony to find himself in the kitchen instead of driving a truck again.
