Javier Colon on Winning ‘The Voice’ & What’s Next for His Career

July 01, 2011 03:36 PM by Shayla Perry

After being declared a front runner from Day 1 of the competition, Javier Colon finally achieved the big break in his career that he’s been waiting for when he was named the first winner of NBC‘s The Voice. So what’s next? Find out Javier’s plans to work with coach Adam Levine on his new album, how he celebrated his big win, and why he was preparing himself for Dia Frampton to take home the top prize in his recent interview.

Here’s what Javier Colon had to say about….

His winning moment…

In that moment I was expecting Carson to say and the winner of The Voice is Dia Frampton. That’s what I was preparing myself for. I just you know, I didn’t think I was going to win.

I just you know, I just was preparing myself. I mean I’ve been through so much in the business. I have this you know, probably not the greatest habit but I have a habit of having either very low or no expectations at all based on just what my past experiences have been. And you know, Dia is absolutely amazing.

She’s an incredible person, she’s an incredible artist and if she had won I mean I would have been extremely happy for her. And I would have completely supported her, I would have given her a hug and I would have told her how much I loved her. And I just would have supported her 100% and I really felt that that’s what was going to happen.

And when he said my name I just honestly was in shock. I just couldn’t believe that I had come so far and I actually won.

The after party…

There was a Voice wrap party that they had for us, which ironically was just right across the street from my old record label, Capitol Records.

It was very strange to get out of the limo and go to walk in and then I look across the street and there was the old record label that I was on, the iconic Capitol Records building. You know, it was a great, great night. We had a really, really fun time. We did some performances with some of the guys from The Voice band that are so amazing.

Yes, we all got up there. We sang some Journey and Cee Lo got up there, Vicci got up there, Nakia, Curtis Grimes. I mean almost a lot of the people from the top 16 were also there too, which was really great. It was such a fun night.

Fate…

I’m a firm believer in what’s meant to be is meant to be. And I actually have a song on my EP that I released last year that just talks about that, you know?

Yes, I harbor even when I was talking about Capitol Records before, I harbor no ill will towards Capitol Records or anybody in the building. I mean I think everything happens for a reason. It just wasn’t supposed to happen the way it did back then and I’m just glad that things came around and I was able to make it work this time. And I’m you know, hell bent on making sure that it works this time.

Performing with the legendary Stevie Nicks…

You know, I am still in shock that I got to perform with Stevie Nicks. Adam surprised me and told me that I would be singing with her and I just about lost it. I mean I just couldn’t believe it.

And then why Landslide? I think it was the song that either Adam chose or the song that Stevie wanted to do. But I have a feeling that Adam wanted me to sing Landslide with her. It’s just she’s such an icon and it’s just such a timeless, amazing song. And I was so nervous going in and singing with her.

And we ran through it one time on the stage like before we even stepped up to the microphones just kind of standing in a circle with her guitar player. And then we stepped up to the microphones and we started doing a couple run throughs on the stage and it really hit me when I looked to my left and I saw her standing there looking back into my eyes just really intently and really focused.

And I realized, I’m like oh my God, I’m singing with Stevie Nicks right now. And I just got a little emotional in the rehearsal because I was like I cannot believe that I have this opportunity. I mean there are so many accomplished artists that have been doing music professionally and successfully for years and years and they haven’t had this opportunity.

So I just felt very, very blessed in that moment and I will never forget that for as long as I live.

The words of wisdom he received from Adam Levine…

You know, Adam really, his best advice for me, we talked a lot about we dissected the songs a lot and one of the best things that we talked about in every song really was how to deliver the lines to make people connect with the songs.

And especially in the beginning when you’re first singing a chorus for example for the first time and we were actually talking about it in Fix You for example. I remember the episode when we were talking about it and he was demonstrating it by singing to me the lights will guide you home, that particular part and how he wanted me to do it in a particular way.

And I’m so glad that we talked about it because it made perfect sense to establish that beautiful melody and to make sure that I don’t rush through it, that I did it nice and slowly and it’s almost everybody’s favorite part of the song and things like that. Just like the intricate things in the songs and delivering the lines are what really I took away from our sessions together.

How his career will impact his family…

We have definitely had some discussions on the possibilities of things. And you know, my goal is to keep my family as close as I possibly can at all times, to be with them as much as I possibly can.

Are we going to be moving from Connecticut permanently? Absolutely not. My home base is Connecticut. It’s my wife’s home base. She grew up in Massachusetts and our support system is there. I would never especially if I’m going to be traveling a lot, I would never you know, uproot my family from the support system that my wife has got, two sisters and her parents that are all within an hour to two hours.

My parents are within an hour, my sister is within a half an hour, my brother is within an hour and a half. So everybody is really, really kind of centrally located there in Connecticut where we are. So I don’t think you know, moving is – actually I know for a fact that moving is not something that we have in our plans.

Now I mean if I’m working on a record in California or somewhere and I can bring the family with me for a few weeks to a month or something like that so that they can be close, that’s something that we would possibly consider. But nothing permanent for sure.

His new album…

Well, the timeframe is going to be September from what I was told. And the type of album that I’m going to make is going to be kind of a mixture. I’m a singer-songwriter at heart.

And it’s probably going to be more of a genre of pop I guess you could say, a singer-songwriter pop thing. It’s going to be kind of like a cross between you know, James Taylor meets Maxwell meets John Mayer thing if that’s possible.
