Food Network Star Recap: Food Truck Feuds

July 10, 2011 07:50 PM by Megan Thompson

The drama heats up on this week’s Food Network Star competition.  Food Network chef, Tyler Florence mentors the contestants in a food truck challenge.  Plus, Penny Davidi is at the center of more controversy.  Keep reading to learn what the drama was and which chef was sent home!

Food Truck Challenge:

The nine remaining contestants are welcomed to their next challenge by, Tyler Florence.  It’s a food truck face-off!  The chefs will be divided up into three teams.  Each team will have to come up with a concept and a menu for a food truck.  Next the team will shoot a thirty second commercial about their food truck.  The promo will be shown to an audience and based on the promo the individuals get to decide which food truck they want to go to.  The team who can get the most fans to their food truck – wins!

To figure out teams, colored keys are drawn out of can.  The food truck teams are as follows:

Team 1: Jeff Mauro, Whitney Chen, Susie Jimenez

Team 2: Jyll Everman, Vic Moea, Orchid Paulmeier

Team 3: Penny Davidi, Mary Beth Albright, Chris Nirschel

The teams now have thirty minutes to figure out what the concept of their food truck is going to be.  The teams immediately get to work.

Whitney, Jeff and Susie decide to have a food truck around “balls” – from around the world.  Susie is not pleased with the concept and lets her teammates know, but they don’t care.

Shooting Promos:

Vic, Jyll and Orchid are up first to shoot their promo.  Their concept is a fierce food fusion truck, tacos with a twist.  Jyll and Vic overpower timid Orchid in the promo shoot.  Tyler points out that Orchid says, “We are going to have a great time,” three times in the shoot.

Up next are Chris, Penny and Mary Beth.  Their food concept is a wrap truck, but they use Charlie’s Angels as the theme for their commercial.  Chris and his “angels” come off cheesy to me, but Tyler appreciates their enthusiasm.

Whitney, Jeff and Susie are last to shoot with Tyler.  Jeff decides he is going “big, larger than life,” with his personality and he does!  Balls on the roll is this team’s concept – meatballs, falafel balls, – you get the picture. Tyler questions the team about its concept, but they decide not to change it.

Next Day:

Jeff is starting to worry about the “balls on the roll” concept.  He is scared the judges might think he has gone over the top with this challenge.   I guess we will have to wait and see.

The contestants get to see their food truck and start preparing the food! Everything from meatballs to lobster rolls is being prepared on these trucks.  Penny, Chris and Mary Beth seem to be the most disconnected team.  Are we going to have more Penny drama?  Looks like it!

Viewing and Eating Time:

It’s time to show the team’s commercial for their food truck.  First up are Vic and his team members, the crowd reacts positively to the promo. Chris and his angels are up next.  The audience thinks the commercial is cheesy, but memorable.  Now, it’s the balls on the roll commercial!  Giada’s reaction says it all, she doesn’t look pleased.  The judges assume Jeff was behind this concept – and they are right!

It’s time to eat and there is a line at the wrap-truck!  Penny is slowing the team down with her filet wraps.  The balls on the roll truck has practically no line at all!  Jeff feels like a failure as he looks how long the lines are for the other two trucks!  The cheeky ball concept doesn’t look like it is going to pay off for this team!  There might not be a long line, but everyone is enjoying the food.  Will the food save this team?  We will have to see what the judges say.

The judges now go around and taste the food from each truck. The judges love Penny’s filet mignon wrap.  Chris’ lobster roll doesn’t please the judges; he ruins the lobster by adding too much cream cheese.  Uninspired is how they describe Mary Beth’s dish.  The judges definitely notice that Orchid doesn’t shine when she is paired with powerful personalities like Vic and Jyll.  Apparently her food doesn’t shine either, because the judges like Vic and Jyll’s food but are disappointed with Orchid’s.  The judges now stop by the balls on the roll truck and immediately ask who came up with the concept.  Jeff takes ownership and explains he thought it would be fun. The judges love the food and are disappointed that the commercial drove people away.  Whitney is the only member of this team the judge’s feel didn’t hit a homerun with the food.

Evaluation and Elimination:

Penny, Mary Beth and Chris are critiqued first.  Immediately Mary Beth and Chris point out that Penny’s steak wrap took too long and help up their line.  This comment starts a cat fight about chopping onions between Penny and Mary Beth.   Bobby Flay notices that Penny is the center of a lot of animosity in the house.  Giada tells Chris that his lobster roll is nasty – ouch!  The judges also slam the team for their commercial.

Vic, Jyll and Orchid are second to the judge’s panel.  The judges like Jyll’s food and personality.  Giada points out that Vic has really grown in this competition.  While, poor Orchid is left in the background.

Next up, balls on the rolls team. The judges feel that Whitney is not being her true self, Bob tells her stop being a student.  The judges want Whitney to be herself! Whitney looks even more defeated when the judges tell they don’t’ like her food.   Susie is praised for her food, but she needs to sell it a little more.  Jeff is praised for his meatball sub, but the judges make it clear they like the simple Jeff not the comedian.

Now the judges pick one person from each team who they feel did the best.  Susie, Vic and Penny are chosen as the top three.  However, Vic is chosen as the overall challenge winner!  Now for the bottom three, which the judges announce, are Orchid, Mary Beth and Whitney!

The judges discuss the bottom three and what each person is missing.  Orchid hasn’t grown, Mary Beth hasn’t shown the cooking chops and Whitney is not showing her personality.  Out of the bottom three – Orchid is eliminated!  Wow, it’s quite surprising that sweet Orchid is eliminated!  Orchid was a judge’s and fan favorite from the beginning. I’m sure we will see Orchid in the future, best of luck to her!

Do you think Orchid should have been eliminated over Whitney?  Who is your favorite chef left in the competition?  Let us know, leave a comment below!

Shocked that the horrible Penny is still around. Aside from that fact the she gets along with no one, she has very severe, harsh angry looks that are not camera friendly. NO ONE whould watch a show with her as the star. Its hard enough watching and waiting for her elimination from week to week.

Orchid in the end should have been eliminated. Ask yourself, who is Orchid? I never knew her strengths or she was as a person. Now Whitney we know has a great personality and good at cooking, and Mary Beth seems like a Soccer Mom or something. But orchid is a southerner and we didnt even see that.

My pick to win it- Jeff or Vic Vegas

It’s regrettable that Orchid did not open up and take the the judge’s advice. She should have and let them know and the viewing audience know who she really is. I’m sure it’s an interesting story why a cute, weet Filipino chick prepares Southern food.

In spite of everything I just mentioned,I find it difficult to believe that she left before Marybeth. I personally would not be interested in watching any show with her as the star.

I do not think Orchid or Marybeth should have been eliminated. Why wasn’t Chris at the bottom instead of Marybeth. Marybeth’s food was not exciting, but Chris’ food was disgusting and he is quite a mess. I am getting SICK of the Penny drama. I wish Penny would suck it up and just be quiet. Of all the people I would like to learn from it would be Penny if her personality was not bad. We need a good Middle Eastern Mama on Food Network. Penny, if you read this. Cut it out stop making us hate you!

Penny has got to go. I have never felt the need to write….she is bad for Food Network. She doesn’t have the ability to filter what she says. The cat noise was so odd.

No way! The frat boy or Whitney should have gone.I’d like to see Penny around more not for the drama but to know more about middle eastern food.

Has anyone else noticed how RIDICULOUS the judges were about the whole “balls” concept?!?!?!? – Especially that Giada DiLaurentis & Bob Tuschman….. will the 2 of you give me a break?!?!?!? God forbid anybody make a parallel between food and the male anatomy!! But had the truck concept been “tits on crackers” – OR – “pussys in pie-shells”… the contestants would have been hailed for their brilliance. You-all make me sick!
