Food Network Star Recap: Wolfgang Puck Visits

July 17, 2011 07:11 PM by Megan Thompson

Tonight on Food Network Star the remaining contestants have the opportunity to cook for Wolfgang Puck.  While most chefs cook to impress Wolfgang, one chef’s dish is an epic failure.  Keep reading to find out which chef bombed and which two contestants are sent home from the Food Network.

Camera Challenge:

Bobby Flay congratulates the competitors for making it to the halfway point in the competition.  Bobby also lets the chefs know that this is considered midterm week and two chefs will be eliminated.  The first challenge will be to prepare a signature dish and then present it to the judge’s panel in a two minute demo.  Before the challenge Bobby gives each chef a bit of advice.

Jyll is up first in the challenge and unfortunately, her presentation doesn’t’ go over well with the judges.  Whitney takes Bobby’s advice and tells a personal story.  Chris, as usual, takes on too much and his presentation is a mess.  The judges tell both Mary Beth and Jeff they didn’t own their presentation.  Susie’s presentation is not “logical” according to the judges.  Penny is nervous in her demo and she definitely doesn’t come off as likeable like Bobby wanted her to.  Vic completely forgot to cook in his demo; he was too busy rambling off ingredients.  Whitney is named as the clear winner of the challenge.

Star Challenge:

The Star Challenge this week is to create an over-the-top dinner party, at the contestant house, for the judge’s panel and no other than Wolfgang Puck! Each contestant will be responsible for making one dish.  The twist – the contestants can’t go shopping they must use what they have in the house.  Since Whitney was the winner of the challenge she was able to pick which course, of the eight course dinner, each chef will make.  Chris is frustrated because he is assigned the dessert course! With only two ovens the chefs will have to share the space.

Let the cooking begin!  Immediately Chris becomes furious and calls sabotage when he thinks someone changes the temperature of the oven.  Whitney notices that Jyll’s risotto is not the right consistency, but Jyll thinks it looks correct.

Chef Wolfgang Puck arrives at the house with the panel of judges.  Presenting the first course is Jeff.  The judges are very impressed with Jeff’s food and his presentation.  Up next is Vegas Vic.  The judge’s find him a lot more likeable in person than in his camera presentations.  Butternut soup is served next by Mary Beth.  As usual, the judges are not impressed with Mary Beth’s food.  Penny presents her shrimp dish and Wolfgang is impressed!

Now poor Jyll is up next and she receives the “ouch” moment of the week!  Without even tasting Jyll’s dish, Wolfgang Puck tells Jyll this is not risotto and brings her back in the kitchen to show her how to cook.  I’m sure as a chef you couldn’t be more mortified!  Jyll just wants to cry her eyes out!  Wolfgang Puck gives Jyll props for not breaking down.  Jyll does cry from embarrassment when she goes back to the kitchen.  Whitney is next to serve her chicken.  The judges like Whitney’s cooking, but are still not sure if she has the star power.  Susie’s food and her personality win over all the judges.  Chris is called a “walking apology” because he apologizes for his food before anyone tastes it.   I guess the apology was necessary because the judges don’t like his dessert.

Evaluation and Elimination:

The judges call Susie infectious as she breaks down and tells a very personal family story.  As for Jyll, they know she had a rough week but they want to see some of the walls come down.  Immature is how the judges describe Chris and his behavior.  The second “ouch” moment goes to Mary Beth when Giada tells her that she cooks like someone who needs tips from a Food Network star!

So who is safe? Susie, Jeff, Whitney, and Vic are the chefs that are named as safe.  Jyll, Mary Beth, Penny and Chris are left standing and two of them will be eliminated! Chris is the first chef to be eliminated. With three women standing Mary Beth is announced as safe!  Penny is then announced as the next chef who is going home!  Wow – Penny was a very shocking choice.  What do you think of this week’s double elimination?  Who is your favorite chef left in the competition?  Let us know, comment below!

Bobby Flay just said Jesus Christ that worse than the dish that wasn’t made right

We reported a spoiler/rumor. We NEVER said we had proof it was true. We are VERY glad that Penny is gone!

I’m shocked that Penny lasted this long. And I think Puck was a complete jerk for what he did. If I was Jyll, I would have said “It may not be an old-fashioned risotto like you’re used to, I was hoping you’d be open-minded enough to try something different.”

As a christian my husband and I are sad that there is very few good shows to watch, I like this network but could not believe when you allowed Bobby Flay to say the Lords name in vain. VERY DISAPOINTED!

I was surprised that they got rid of Penny without having to drive a stake into her heart.

Damn…fell asleep for the elimination!!! Would have completely LOVED to see Penny go home, I hated all the drama she brought to the show. Must say I’m surprised though since Mary Beth’s food has been so bad and at least Penny had her food going for her.

Honestly though I’m most happy to see Penny go home because I thought she was a threat to win it and it’s one less obstacle in the way of Vic’s victory. GO VIC!!!!!

I didn’t want to see Penny win it all but it was ridiculous to send her home before Mary Beth or Jyll since neither of them is a very good cook. Why would you watch a cooking show hosted by someone who cannot cook?

Shocked that Bobby said Jesus Christ and then to show the recap after commercial of him saying it in frustration over Jyll. I’ve watched the show for years and was not happy this language was allowed.

I’d rather watch Penny for one more week than Mary Beth, only knows how to sell her food that tastes bland according to the judges. Mary Beth should have gone with Chris this week.

I felt sorry for Jyll but honestly that risotto she made wasn’t risotto. It looked like paste on top of corn!

Felt bad for Jyll but her risotto looked like paste! She lucked out because Chris’ cake looked less appetizing. As for Mary Beth, she should have left with Chris instead of Penny. Penny has the wrong attitude but at least she put out great food.

Agree with Debbie and Chris – I did not like Bobby Flay using Jesus Christ as a curse word. I think I’ll email Food Network about it.

Yes, this is the chef Puck who has put his name on frozen pizza-sell out. He was rude and condescending, will never eat at his restaurants. Bobby needs to watch his words, WTH would have been better. Penny needed to go because of personality, that’s a lot of what this show is about.

  15. Tim Says:

I understand why Penny was eliminated. In order to be a food network star you need to be able to get along with everyone; her food was good but her personality didn’t cut it. I am a Christian and of course I was not offended by Jesus Christ. It’s not like it’s a curse word or the kids are watching. Get over it. Way worse things said on TV.

@Tim: “I was not offended by Jesus Christ. It’s not like it’s a curse word or the kids are watching. Get over it. Way worse things said on TV.”

Unless Flay was praying to Jesus, then he was taking the name of God (which you believe in) in vein. That is blasphemy, and something God says not to do (and as a believer, why would you do that to the name of God who died for your sins?). Be careful how you justify the use of it–there is worse, but to God it’s all offensive.
