Fox’s U.S. version of The X Factor hasn’t even debuted yet and it’s already making news with a lawsuit brought on by Simon Fuller. Read on to see why the American Idol creator is suing Simon Cowell’s latest show…
American Idol creator Simon Fuller is suing the Fox network for “credits” and “monetary fees” related to the U.S. version of Simon Cowell’s The X Factor.
The lawsuit, which was made public on Wednesday (July 20), claims the network and The X Factor’s producers FremantleMedia North America refused to uphold a 2005 contract giving Simon Fuller an executive producer credit and monetary fees for the show.
A spokesperson for Simon Fuller released the following statement: “Mr. Fuller has prudently attempted to settle this matter privately, but the other parties have refused to honor the original contract leaving him no other choice but to pursue legal action.”
Fox and Fremantle released a counter statement saying, “Mr. Fuller has not been hired, nor performed any duties, on the U.S. version of The X Factor. His suit seeks payment and credit as an executive producer despite his neither having been approved by the required parties, nor hired, as such.”
This is all coming from old wounds between Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller, when Fuller made accusations that Cowell’s The X Factor, which has been running in Britain for a long time, was similar to American Idol. Apparently, Fuller agreed to the credit and money to make it all go away, but now it seems to have popped back up again.
Wow, a lawsuit? What a way to get some publicity going for a highly anticipated show that debuts on September 21. Can’t we all just live in peace and harmony and watch Simon Cowell and Paula Abul take over our television again?
