Platinum Hit Recap: Empowerment Reveals The Top Four

July 22, 2011 07:11 PM by Lisa Princ

Bravo‘s Platinum Hit was back tonight as the remaining five contestants were challenged to write songs about empowerment, which would reveal the top four. This week, just off the heels of Johnny Marnell‘s shocking elimination, more drama carried on and we were once again shocked. Why? You’ll have to read on to find out!

Tonight on Platinum Hit the five remaining songwriters were asked to write a hook that included the phrase “kiss the flame” as five were about to be narrowed to four. Right off the bat, Nick was basking in the fact that Johnny was no longer there – too bad Jes was pissed about it. Jewel explained that the song needed to be about empowerment, as she was joined by Doug Brod, the editor for Spin Magazine. Jewel explained that one member of the winning team this week would receive a feature in Spin Magazine, thus why Doug was paying them a visit – and to check out their hooks of course!

Each songwriter seemed to have a different take on their hooks this week, as Scotty Granger decided to write about coming out of the closet with his sexuality, while Nick Nittoli was writing relationships, and Brian Judah was tackling his demons over dealing with the loss of his mother. Sonyae Elise chose to write about strong women, while Jes Hudak tackled her own personal struggles as we learned that she was drugged and taken advantage of a few years back.

After listening to their hooks, the two that won over the judges were Brian’s and Scotty’s, giving them the choice to chose their teams. Brian, who had the best hook chose first in Jes, as he felt she was a good writer and could understand this song the best. Scotty was thrilled to get Sonyae as he planned on choosing her anyway, and Nick was the lone man standing. Brian was asked if he wanted to take Nick or pass him to Scotty, and while Nick secretly hoped Brian would choose him, Brian did not, so he was sent to Scotty’s team. Brian knew that Nick and Jes hated each other and thought it was best for the team.

The writing seemed to be difficult for the teams this week, as Scotty’s team could not seem to agree on much, while Brian left Jes with most of the lyrics as he worked on the melody. Scotty’s team was stuck at the last minute trying to come up with a bridge, but they did although none of them were confident in their song. Brian and Jes were extremely confident in their song, although Jes thought that Brian spent too much time on the melody. But what would the judges think?

Joining the judging panel this week was Colbie Calliat. After performing their tunes for the judges, the teams went backstage to wait where Jes decided it would be a good time to go off on Nick. The entire season Jes has been quiet and reserved, but somehow the loss of Johnny made her angry enough to tell Nick off, although Nick really did nothing but tell her that he didn’t like her song. When they returned to the judges, Scotty, Nick and Sonyae were shocked to learn that their song was the winner. After chatting with them a bit, the judges chose Nick Nittoli as the winner of the Spin magazine spread.

That meant that Brian and Jes were in the bottom as the judges did not feel their song was strong enough, or had enough good lyrics. And then the blame game started again as Jes began to boil over in anger – who was this girl we saw tonight? She blamed Brian’s lack of lyrical help and then realized that she should have screamed and stood up to him. Brian did not have too much to say aside from the fact that he thought he should stay because he has written winning songs in the past, while Jes had not. But when it was time for elimination, we were shocked to see that the judges chose to send Brian Judah home, instead of Jes. In my opinion, despite how many lyrics Brian contributed, Jes has been a weak link all season.

Did the judges get it right this week? I have to say I was thrilled to see all your comments last week – I was starting to think I was the only person watching the show! Let’s chat again, I want to hear your thoughts! Be sure to tune in next week for a new episode! You can get the songs you heard on the show on Bravo’s website!

Jess (I’m sorry Jes with one S cause that makes her so much cooler and more interesting right?) needs to go. Man her songs are boring. Tonight she made rape boring. That’s tough to do.

And getting in to the top four with the ol’ “I know I can do it” excuse is kind of pathetic. If you could do it why haven’t you in the last bunch of weeks?

Of course, I was glad that Johnny got booted last week and Nick got to stay so maybe I don’t agree with the masses.

Personally…I don’t think the judges got it right. I think Brian and Jes did a great job and I think they were the better team. I could relate to their song more.

I personally think that Brian and Jess song sounded better than the other song. Even though, it might sounded s little like a Hannah Montana song, but it was more catchy than the other one. SO I really think that the judges screwed up..
