Platinum Hit Recap: The Winner Is…

August 05, 2011 06:53 PM by Lisa Princ

Bravo‘s Platinum Hit comes to a close tonight as the three finalists battled it out for the crown in the season finale. This time, the songwriters would be writing the song of their lives, as Leona Lewis joined the judging panel. Who took the win? You’ll have to read on to find out!

Platinum Hit aired their season one finale tonight as Jewel and Kara DioGuardi invited the final three up to the rooftop for a celebration. While there, they asked Scotty who he thought his biggest competition was and he replied with Sonyae. Sonyae agreed that Scotty was her biggest competition, which left Jes feeling left out, leading her to defend her songwriting. I am sure you agree that we all knew she was not the strongest one in this final three, nor do many folks even think she belonged there.

Then Sonyae Elise, Scotty Granger and Jes Hudak were given their final challenge: to write the song of their life! Sounds like an easy enough task, right? This time around, the songwriters would get advice from producers Evan “Kidd” Bogart, and some help with their sounds from producer J.R. Rotum. So what did our songwriters write about for their final song?

Scotty Granger tackled a very touchy, and personal subject for his song. Scotty’s song “Beautiful You” was focused around his sexuality, and the fact that he was once ashamed, but now he has accepted himself. Scotty’s tune was very catchy and top 40 sounding. When he was visited by Evan Bogart, Evan had nothing but praise for him, and J.R Rotum only strengthened his already powerful song.

Sonyae Elise’s tune got off to a rough start and she could not decide which way to go. Sonyae had originally wanted to do a love song which compared love to religion, but when she asked Scotty for some advice, he deterred her from using the title “My Religion.” That was only until Evan Bogart showed up though, as Evan fell in love with the title “My Religion,” and encouraged Sonyae to keep that one. Sonyae was nervous as she worked with J.R. Rotum, hoping they had the same idea for her chords.

Jes Hudak started off tonight with the concept revolving her ex-boyfriend. She broke down as she shared how she left him and let us believe that he needed to follow his dreams and believe in himself. She also dished that she and Johnny had a romance, but she didn’t say whether or not they were still dating. Jes’ session with Evan went good and she took in all the advice he dished out. Meanwhile, her song which sounded very much like a ballad was quickly turned into a top 40 pop anthem by J.R. Rotum.

When it was time for their final performances, the room was filled with music producers, big names, and all the prior contestants. From the look of Johnny’s eyes, I think it is safe to assume that he and Jes are still an item. Another nice surprise the contestants received on the finale was their parents in the audience! But Scotty got double the surprise when he saw his father sitting there, right next to his boyfriend!

Leona Lewis joined the panel tonight to help the judges choose the winner, and it proved to be a tough decision. All three of their songs were definitely the best of the season, and I personally thought Scotty’s song was the best and had the most powerful message. The judges, however, had their favorite and after a good deliberation, Scotty Granger was the first one told that his song missed!

With only Jes Hudak and Sonyae Elise left, the judges praised how far Jes had come, but they were awarding the grand prize and the win to Sonyae Elise! Sonyae definitely deserved the win as she was by far one of the most consistent and strong contestants. Congratulations to Sonyae! What do you think? Did the judges get it right tonight? I thought it was pretty obvious that Scotty should have won – out of the three songs, his is the only one that really sounded like a hit you’d hear on the radio. I’m okay with Sonyae winning, though. She has some amazing strengths that no one else has. I’m really glad Jes didn’t win. She’s such a whiner and a brat, and her songs are all fluff with no depth.

I think they got it right.

Jess is a talented writer, but she is not mature as a writer. Her songs all have a similar melody and she has potential but needs guidance and practice.

I thought Scotty’s song was beautiful… I honestly thought he would be the winner – or at least the runner up. It was my favorite of the three.

In the end, I knew Sonyae would win it.

    1. Nick picked her to win after that song. As much as anyone thinks he’s a douche or doesn’t like his music – he has a brilliant ear and his instincts are spot on.

    2. While Sonyae doesn’t have the ability to play instruments, she is a gold mine of concepts and lyrical gems. Paired with someone who has the ability to translate her concepts into actual chords, she definitely deserves the win.

Honestly, I think she should write her own songs and make her own album. Her chops are right up there with some of the top singers of today in my opinion.. CONGRATS SONYAE!

Congatulations Sonyae!! From the beginning, I thought it was going to come down to Scotty, Nick and you. I loved you throughout the entire competition and am thrilled for you.
