Hannah McIalwain Talks About Her Time On The Glee Project, Her Crush On Damian McGinty And Her Future
August 08, 2011 05:28 PM by Veronica Dudo
On last night’s episode of The Glee Project, believability was the task at hand for the five remaining hopefuls. Alex Newell, Damian McGinty Jr., Hannah McIalwain, Lindsay Pearce, and Samuel Larsen were fighting it out for a guest starring role on Fox’s hit TV series, Glee. With guest mentor, Jenna Ushkowitz it was Hannah who was ultimately sent home. Keep reading to get the scoop on her time in the competition and what’s next in her career!
Ryan Murphy seemed to like you a lot on The Glee Project, why do you think you were eliminated?
I think with the song that I was assigned and also the state of my voice–I was having a lot of vocal issues but I think that in that moment I was just out-performed by Lindsay and Samuel; they both did an absolutely amazing job and like I said when it came down to it it was just about talent and I think in that moment their talent shined through a little bit more than mine did.
The mentors suggested that you work on building your confidence–are you still working on that?
I think that, that’s something that I’m always going to be working on, I’m always going to be striving to better myself and to improve on that. But, I just gained so much confidence from the whole experience; it has been an eye opener for me. I feel like I’ve grown into the person that I’ve always kind of strived to be and I have gained a lot of confidence and I think just the more experience I get the more confident I’ll be in myself as a performer.
What’s next in your career?
I don’t know yet. I live in L.A. now, I’m here and I’m ready to grab the city by the horns. Hopefully, I’ll sign with an agency, go on auditions, and I certainly haven’t given up on my dream of being on Glee–maybe Ryan will second think it and give me a call someday, so I definitely hope so for that.
After your last-chance performance, you talked to Ryan about your confidence; did that conversation get edited for TV?
I think they ended up having to cut it down a little bit but honestly I wish our conversation could have been longer, I feel like with me I’m just so open with everything and I’m just myself 100 percent of the time which is a good thing and I felt like Ryan kind of felt like he already knew me so I kind of wish that we would have had a more in-depth conversation. Honestly, it seemed pretty short to me but I’m still happy with it and the fact that Ryan liked me and said I was the show that meant the world to me. It’s sad to go but I’m still happy with everything.
Have you talked to Damian since all of your confessionals were aired where you admitted to having a crush on him?
Yes, I have seen Damian since then; we actually got to go to the Glee movie premiere the other night–the 3D movie–so he knows and he knew how I felt about him during the show it was one of those unspoken but completely obvious things but you think that you’re playing it off well and you think you’re being coy about it but you’re actually totally obvious (laughs) but we’re still really good friends, we keep in-touch and he’s a great person and we still joke around and have a good time.
Has there been any talk of a tour for The Glee Project?
Well, I haven’t heard anything but I can certainly dream (laughs) because that would be absolutely amazing; that would be the dream of a lifetime.
Who would you like to see win The Glee Project?
Honestly, I feel like all of them have worked so hard to be where they’re at and I think it’s really anyone’s game at this point.
