Project Runway Recap: The Designers Dress Judge Nina Garcia

August 18, 2011 08:44 PM by Veronica Dudo

Project Runway on Lifetime is keeping contenders on their toes as the up-and-coming designers vie to win the competition. In tonight’s episode, the participants are told they will be designing for a very important client who knows a lot about fashion. Keep reading to find out who it is and which contestant is ultimately cut!

Host, judge and executive producer; Hedi Klum announces to the remaining designers that their challenge this week is to dress fellow judge Nina Garcia. The designers are shocked to hear the news. After reflecting on their impending assignment, the designers start to stress since Nina is the Fashion Director at Marie Claire magazine and one of the professionals judging them! Hedi explains that the contestants will have to design a look that Nina can wear both during the day at work and then be able to go out in it at night for an industry event. Nina tells the designers that in addition to their creations transitioning from daytime to nighttime wear, it must also be classic with an edge. Whoever wins the challenge will have their look featured in a Marie Claire ad on taxi cabs throughout New York City. The stakes are higher as the designers all agree that having their look featured on Taxi cabs would be a huge honor.

The designers are given 30 minutes to make sketches before consulting with Nina. During their one-on-one meetings with Nina–where they pitched their sketches–Nina tells them what she thinks will work and what could be a potential fashion disaster.

Next, the designers have a limited amount of time to select the color and type of fabric they want to use for their creations. While picking their fabric, three of the contestants select the same exact print!

Back in the workroom, the designers find out there is an added bonus–the challenge winner’s look will also be photographed for an editorial in Marie Claire magazine. The participants move on to fit their models. Shortly after, time is up for their first day and they must leave the workroom.

The next day the designers get to finish up. Mentor Tim Gunn enters to tell them it’s time for the runway show. Judges Hedi, Nina and Michael Kors, along with guest judges Kerry Washington and Joanna Coles watch as all of the designers’ creations make their way down the catwalk.

After making notes and adding up scores; six designers are selected representing both the best and the worst including: Cecilia Motwani, Viktor Luna, Kimberly Goldson, Anya Ayoung Chee, Danielle Everine and Julie Tierney.

The judges deliberate and select Kimberley as the winner. Finally, it’s time to send one of the designers home and the judges pick Julie. Later, Kimberly visits Nina at her Marie Claire office on the day she is wearing her design. Kimberly says she is so excited to win a challenge and to have the opportunity to spend more one-on-one time with Nina.
