So You Think You Can Dance contestant, Sasha Mallory, wanted fans to believe in her for her dance ability and while she’s not afraid to tell people she’s gay, she didn’t believe it was important. Read on for all the details.
So You Think You Can Dance season eight runner-up, Sasha Mallory, is out and proud, but during her time on the hit Fox show, she didn’t believe her sexual orientation was that important to the process.
The dancer said in an interview on AfterEllen.com, “It’s not important for America to know that personal side of me. They just needed to know if I could dance and if I had a personality. They didn’t really need to know if I was gay or straight. Who I’m sleeping with is not important. This is my craft, my art, it’s what I do and who I sleep with doesn’t really change that, I don’t think.”
With many reality contestants faced with the choice of divulging their sexual orientation, it wasn’t about Sasha not feeling proud of who she was — it was a simple choice to let America see her for her talent. She said, “I’m not afraid to tell people I’m gay. I’m proud all over the place. Ask anyone!”
She added, “It’s just something that never needed to come up because it would just take the focus off of my dancing and it will put it into ‘I’m gay,’ ya know? But I’m happy to talk about it. I’m totally open about it and I’m a very open person.”
So You Think You Can Dance executive producer Nigel Lythgoe echoes Sasha Mallory’s thoughts. Lythgoe produces American Idol, which recently came under fire by Adam Levine for their treatment of gay contestants being open.
Nigel Lythgoe recently told Entertainment Weekly of Levine’s claims, ”To be frank, I didn’t understand why we’re talking about contestants being gay or not gay. I don’t go into my dentist and say, ‘Are you gay?’”
He added, “I don’t say to contestants on So You Think You Can Dance, ‘Are you gay?’ What does it got to do with me? What does it got to do with anybody?”
We say, do your thing, people. Gay, straight, bi-sexual — if you have talent go for it. If you want to be open, do that too. If not, that’s also your choice.
What do you guys think of reality contestants being open about their sexuality?
