America’s Got Talent Recap: Second Set of Semi-Final Performances Live

August 30, 2011 07:59 PM by Candace Young

Tonight, the second set of semi-finalists will perform live on America’s Got Talent.  Only five spots are left in the final, so tonight’s acts will have to bring it if they hope to continue on for a shot at the grand prize.  Judges Howie Mandel, Sharon Osbourne, and Piers Morgan watch as Nick Cannon dangles from a rope over the stage hollering, “Are you guys ready to see some talent?” Keep reading for all the highlights…

Kinetic King is up first. After his success in the Wildcard round, he’s back to try again. This time his chain reaction set up works again and the audience eats it up. Piers tells him it wasn’t as spectacular as the last time, but the audience loves him and he wishes him luck. Sharon loved it. She says it was exciting and fabulous. Howie agrees it was sensational to watch – explosive! He says there were things flying everywhere, and he’d love to see it for an hour.

Fatally Unique take the stage next with their dance act.  Sharon says they’ll have to give a ground-breaking performance tonight. They’re ready to fight for their dream. Their routine begins with them breaking out of an insane asylum – their performance is fast and excellent. Sharon is amazed with their speed and says it’s the year of ‘mean’ dance – she is loving what they’re doing tonight. Howie agrees that it’s the year of dance, but says there are so many great dance groups. He wonders if they were ‘fatally unique’ enough. Piers likes the intensity and determination they bring to their routine.

Landon Swank the magician is up. He’s been working with his dad non-stop on a new illusion.  He has to top his death-defying water tank stunt from last time. The act begins with Landon pointing out to the judges that there are four numbered boxes on the stage and four corresponding numbered remotes in front of them. Each judge should wind up with a remote and one will remain untouched. Landon is in one of the boxes – all are rigged with live explosives. He asks them to detonate on the count of three. All the boxes explode except number 2 – Landon emerges from it. He asks Piers to detonate the box he just came from – it explodes. Everyone is impressed. Howie says, “Absolute wow!” Piers says he’s been a dark horse but he’s a very good magician. He calls it a brilliant illusion, superbly executed – he thinks he’ll get into the top ten. Sharon says the presentation was A+. She admires that he paced himself perfectly.

Acrobats, Gymkana, are ready to take their semi-final shot on America’s Got Talent. They pushed the limits on the last routine and are ready to go higher. Their high-flying acrobatics and balancing on chairs is amazing to watch, but Piers buzzes. They continue, with acrobats jumping through a hoop of fire. This goes badly wrong and the hoop ends up on the ground with a guy beside it and the act ends. Piers says they’re great at what they do, but it gets repetitive. He also comments on the mistake which cut the act short. Nick says it was Piers’ fault for buzzing and making them nervous. Sharon cheers Nick on. She says she didn’t see their personalities tonight, but their acrobatics are tremendous. Howie thinks they have so much to offer.

Summerwind Skippers, who Piers said made skipping sexy, are back. This time they’re hoping there will be no mistakes like in the wildcard round. Tonight they’re sporting a post-apocalypse theme set to Till The World Ends.  It’s pretty impressive, but they do make a couple of errors again near the end. Piers buzzes as they finish. Sharon comments on their fantastic progression – it’s incredible what they do. She knows they’ll be in the final. Howie says they bring edge to skipping and he apologizes for Piers’ buzz. Piers is booed as he tries to speak. He defends his buzz, saying they made two mistakes and at this level it’s got to be better than that.

Nick introduces hip-hop dancer, Snap Boogie, who is up next. Piers says if he does what he thinks he can do, he’ll be in the top ten.  Snap Boogie begins surrounded by ballet-type dancers with a lyrical song playing and then he breaks out and freestyles to a classic disco beat. Howie thinks he did great. Piers didn’t like it. He say he was one of the freshest acts they had and it became cheesy tonight – he lost what he is about tonight. Sharon wasn’t crazy about the back-up dancers, but thinks Snap is organically great and a tremendous dancer.

11 year-old Anna Graceman is ready to take the stage to sing. She’s performing Motley Crue’s tune, Home Sweet Home tonight. Anna accompanies herself on piano and belts it out. Piers is impressed and joins the standing ovation. He deems it the best performance of the night. Sharon tells her she called her friends in Motley Crue to watch tonight and she thinks they’ll love it. Howie keeps it short – wow!

Male pole dancer, Steven Retchless, is back with his apparatus. Sharon hopes he pushes it tonight. Steven can almost taste the Vegas act. He takes the stage on the center pole with a pole on each side. He has five other dancers with him. Shortly after he begins, Piers hits the buzzer. Steven does some impressive poses but it’s not overly exciting. Sharon comments on a particularly sensational move he made and says the others he brought in were fantastic. Piers can’t see it being a million dollar act in Las Vegas. He complains that poles should be left to firemen. Howie thinks he was great.

Smage Brothers Riding Show is back with their dirt bike tricks. Howie is excited to see what they bring tonight, but also concerned. They’ve got Grandma Smage with them tonight. They hit the stage and immediately begin doing heart-stopping jumps over the brother laying on the floor. They go up and down a narrow ramp and then finish by jumping over the entire family (six of them in overalls including Grandma) repeatedly. Amazing! Piers calls it unbelievable. He knows they did stuff they didn’t even do in practice because they weren’t sure they could pull it off. Howie hopes the excitement transferred to the folks at home – it was incredible! Sharon loves that the whole family was involved in their trials.

Professor Splash is jumping from 70 feet up into a pool of flames. Nick calls for complete silence. The pool is lit on fire and he jumps. He seems to land feet first and there is much concern when he doesn’t surface immediately. The flames go out and he appears – everyone cheers. Howie understands that it’s dangerous, but doesn’t think it’s as exciting as when he landed in 12 inches of water from half the height. Piers agrees – he thinks they’ve seen the best of him. Sharon thought it was quite fantastic.

Crooner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. is ready to do his thing in the semi-finals. Piers says he embodies what America’s Got Talent is about and expects him to kill it tonight. Landau belts out I’m In Love much to the delight of the crowd who get to their feet applauding! Sharon says it makes her feel so good to see him perform – his voice is like velvet and his tone is amazing. Howie thinks America will get on board and vote him into the final. Piers doesn’t think it was his best performance – he seemed nervous and missed a few notes – but when he hit some of the bigger notes it was great. He’s not sure he’ll be in the top ten.

Nick announces that David Guetta with Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj and Susan Boyle will be performing on tomorrow night’s results show!

The final act tonight is Silhouettes. Nick says they’re here to create the world. The act begins with a billowing cloth – the dancers emerge from underneath and then begin assembling a globe behind the screen which dissolves into a brilliant blue. Howie thinks it was phenomenal. Piers thought it was very good, but he preferred some of the earlier routines. Sharon agrees it wasn’t as strong as their last two, but she thinks they’ll be back – what they do is a thing of beauty.

There was a problem voting for Landua. For the first ten minutes of voting a recording was saying the call did not go through, however it was going through for other contestents.
