Project Runway Recap: Art Inspires Fashion

September 01, 2011 08:18 PM by Veronica Dudo

A new episode of Project Runway aired tonight on Lifetime as the designers were given the challenge to create avant garde looks with Kenneth Cole guest judging. Keep reading to find out which contestants’ fashions wowed the judges and whose disappointed!

Mentor Tim Gunn tells the top 11 designers on Project Runway that they will be working with some special artists on their look for this week. The remaining designers are Anthony Ryan Auld, Anya Ayoung-Chee, Becky Ross, Bert Keeter, Bryce Black, Danielle Everine, Joshua McKinley, Kimberly Goldson, Laura Kathleen, Olivier Green, and Viktor Luna. Tim takes them to the Harlem School of the Arts. While they’re in the art studio, the designers and the art students work together on paintings. The idea is for the designers to use the paintings as inspiration for their avant garde pieces. Tim explains to the participants that their designs can be daring, dramatic, pretty, provocative and of-course fashionable!

The contestants get to go through Mood to select their colors and buy their fabrics. In the work room the designers are working with their sketches when Tim announces that their paintings have arrived courtesy of some special guests. The art students visit the designers while Tim walks around and survey’s each look. The designers scramble to finish their creations.

It’s now time for the models to head to the Garnier and L’Oreal studios for hair and make-up. The designers accompany them and explain the look they would like the hair stylists and make-up artists to do on each model.

The judges, models, designers and art students gather for the runway show. The judges for this episode include Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, Zanna Roberts Rassi, and Kenneth Cole.

After the fashion show, Josh C.; Laura; Bert; Olivier; Joshua M; and Anthony Ryan are asked to stay behind. While the judges deliberate, they all agree that they like Joshua M.’s design very much, they also are impressed with Laura’s. They also say they understand where Anthony Ryan was trying to go with his design and he pulled it off. The judges aren’t impressed with Olivier’s design–they feel it was a very boring creation meanwhile they think Josh C.’s design has a dominatrix yet trashy feel to it and Bert’s one-piece-pants-look is very awkward with the odd shapes he attached to it.

The six designers are called back out to find out who is staying in the competition and who will be sent home.

Anthony Ryan is selected as the winner of this challenge and Josh C. is eliminated for the second time.
