It’s a concept reality television fans are very familiar with — reality stars from one show crossing over to compete on a different one. This time, it’s Survivor: Africa winner Ethan Zohn who is teaming up with his real-life girlfriend, and Survivor: The Amazon winner, Jenna Morasca. But they’re not back in the jungle to outwit, outplay and outlast. This time, they’re rushing toward the finish line where the $1 million prize awaits on the upcoming season of The Amazing Race. Read on for more info!
If you were simply scanning over the cast when it was officially announced yesterday, you may not have noticed that Ethan and Jenna were one of the 11 teams. Just like the twist of Ozzy and Coach returning to compete on Survivor: South Pacific, the casting of Ethan and Jenna came as no big surprise since a fan site posted images of the duo running through an airport several months ago. They are definitely the most well-known duo this season.
Ethan first competed on Survivor’s third season while Jenna first competed on Survivor’s sixth edition. Both returned to the game for their second time on season eight, Survivor: All-Stars. But Survivor is not the only common bond these two share. They have each been touched by cancer very publicly. For Jenna, it came during her time on Survivor: All-Stars. You may remember that Jenna left the competition voluntarily so she could return home to be with her mother who was sick with cancer. Jenna’s mom passed away a few days after she returned to her side. For Ethan, his public moment with cancer came in the form of a personal diagnosis. In April of 2009, Ethan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer — CD20-positive Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He’s currently in remission.
“Having gone through what I’ve been through and having survived cancer, you get a perspective on life and what’s important,” Ethan said during a pre-game interview with CBS. ” I don’t want to let any moment go by without taking advantage of it. This is such an incredible opportunity and it’s gonna be so much fun. Yeah, it’s gonna be stressful and it’s gonna be horrible at times, and I’m sure we’re gonna fight and bicker, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s awesome. To be able to go out there and do it with Jenna is a blessing.”
Ethan and Jenna, who have been dating for several years, live together in New York City. The Amazing Race 19 premieres on Sunday, September 25.
