Project Runway Recap: The Designers Find Out What Women Really Want

September 15, 2011 08:39 PM by Veronica Dudo

On tonight’s episode of Project Runway airing on Lifetime, the designers work with men clientele to create looks for their wives or girlfriends as they take directions from the men! Keep reading to find out how the nine designers handled the task.

The remaining designers face the challenge of making outfits for real people, not models this time around on the fashion reality TV competition. Host, Heidi Klum tells the top nine designers on Project Runway that they must pick one of the men on-stage for this challenge. The remaining designers are Anthony Ryan Auld, Anya Ayoung-Chee, Bert Keeter, Bryce Black, Joshua McKinley, Kimberly Goldson, Laura Kathleen, Olivier Green, and Viktor Luna.

After selecting one of the guys, Heidi sends everyone over to meet mentor, Tim Gunn. Back in the work room, Tim reveals this week’s challenge. The designers will be constructing looks for their clients’ other half–either their wives or girlfriends.

Next, they head to Mood to select their fabrics and colors. It’s interesting to see some of the choices both from the designers and their clients. Some of the guys struggle with their significant other’s style more than the rest. Then, the ladies show up to talk about what they would like to see the designers create for them. After talking through their ideas the women and the men make suggestions and the designers begin the design process.

The next day, the women try on their outfits again; the designers make some last minute touches. Afterwards, the designers accompany the women down to hair and make-up where they explain the “look” they envision for their models.

Regular judges Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia are joined this week by guest judge and actress Malin Akerman. The girlfriends and wives make their way down the runway.

After making notes on each piece, the judges select those who excelled at this challenge and those who fell short. The highest scorers were Joshua, who created a simple, elegant, black dress with a sexy back; Anya, who designed an African inspired kimono and Viktor, whose look was a teal blouse and a grey skirt with a mustard colored trim and matching purse. The designers in the bottom three were Bert, Bryce and Anthony Ryan.

The judges discuss the designers in the bottom three. They say that Bert made a boring dress again which his clients could have purchased at the mall; Bryce designed a hot pink dress with big pockets down by his client’s leg which adds bulk to a woman’s thigh area and Anthony Ryan’s design reflected an adult’s uniform or cheerleader’s outfit.

The designers in the top and bottom three are all brought back out onto the stage. Joshua was named the winner of this challenge while Bryce was sent home.
