Simon Cowell is launching the US version of The X Factor tonight (Sept. 21) and from the looks of the promos, don’t expect puppy dogs and butterflies — this is Simon Cowell doing what he does best — finding a star. Read on to see what he told Piers Morgan about The X Factor and his decision to axe Cheryl Cole…
Simon Cowell vacated his role at American Idol to, among other reasons, bring The X Factor to Fox. The prickly Brit sat down with Piers Morgan to discuss the show and mention of Cheryl Cole, who he unexpectedly fired, did come up.
First, Cowell told Morgan of his former show, American Idol, “You know, right from the get-go, when I saw these trailers and it was like every voice deserves to be heard, dig, a warmer, kinder person, dig. I’m thinking, okay, you really don’t want me on the show, when I saw it back.”
Looks like even Simon Cowell can get the “not wanted” blues.
Cowell added of The X Factor, “I’ve done this show for a long time. I do think it’s the best one. I actually do … I’ve been quite cautious about saying to people how they’re going to feel about it, what is different, because I want them to work it out for themselves.”
As for the press surrounding Cheryl Cole and why he chose to nix her from the show, Simon Cowell said, “She looked a bit bewildered.”
He explained to Piers Morgan, “Not everyone’s like you, Piers. You come to a country like America, it’s a big deal, it takes a while to adjust and I took the view along with a few other people that she would have been comfortable back in the UK.”
He added, “That’s what you have to do when you produce. You have to make decisions in the moment. I take full responsibility.”
